Quick thoughts from Richard on this trade:
At a quick glance, Mike Rizzo did well. If you remember, Thomas was part of the John Lester trade that was made back on July 30, 2021 (funny enough, that is tomorrow); in theory, Rizzo was able to turn John Lester into a couple of prospects in the Guardians franchise.
LHP Alex Clemmey (Guardian's No. 8 prospect according to MLBPipeline), SS Rafael Ramirez (No. 22), and 3B Jose Tena (who is currently at the Triple-A level) are near or could be near major league level. These prospects could be interesting depth pieces or even starters at some positions of need, especially at the second and third base.
Lane Thomas will finish his time with the Nationals with a batting average of .257, an OPS of .759, 205 RBI, 60 Home Runs, 1,604 at-bats, and 1,777 plate appearances across four years and 424 games.
This season, Thomas was hitting a batting average of .253, an OPS of .738, eight homeruns, 40 RBI, 76 hits, and 42 runs.
Updated (7:15 p.m. EDT)
According to Jim Bowden, the Nationals will acquire LHP Alex Clemmey, INF Jose Tena, and SS Rafael Ramirez Jr. from the Guardians in exchange for OF Lane Thomas.
According to Ken Rosenthal and Robert Murray, the Washington Nationals have traded Lane Thomas to the Cleveland Guardians.
According to Murray, the Washington Nationals will at least acquire from the Guardians: "Alex Clemmey, who was drafted in the second round in 2023."
More to come...
