Game storylines and notes

The Washington Nationals will conclude their two game series against the Atlanta Braves tonight.

Last game out

The Atlanta Braves dominated the Washington Nationals in a 12-0 victory on Tuesday night at Nationals Park. A quartet of home runs, including two from Michael Harris II, propelled the Braves to their decisive win.

LHP MacKenzie Gore got the loss for the Nationals as he surrendered seven runs (two of them earned) and only pitched 3.2 innings, striking out three and walking three. Gore gave up one home run and threw 79 pitches 49 of them being strikes.

Schedule

The Washington Nationals will continue their homestand when they face the Miami Marlins for a four-game series that starts tomorrow night.

After the four-game series against the Marlins, the Nationals will embark on their final road trip of the season, traveling to New York to face the Mets and then to Chicago to face the Cubs.

The Washington Nationals have a 9-11 record over their last 20 games and secured at least a series split in three of their four series.

Sweet Baby James

James Wood continues to be on a tear. He's reached base safely in 17 of his last 18 games, including an impressive 11-game streak. During this hot stretch, he's racked up 18 hits and ten walks and has even been hit by a pitch.

His performance has been nothing short of exceptional. Since July 27, Wood has led the National League in on-base percentage (.413) and ranks fifth in Major League Baseball. He's also sixth in the NL in batting average (.313).

Wood's power has been a major factor in his success. Since his call-up on July 1, he's recorded 42 batted balls over 105 MPH, ranking fifth in the National League and ninth in MLB. He's been especially effective with those hard-hit balls, going 23-for-42 (.548) with two doubles and three home runs.

Jake Rattle and Roll

RHP Jake Irvin’s curveball has been a weapon this season. Opponents are batting just .233 against it, the ninth-lowest average among NL pitchers with at least 100 plate appearances. His curveball has also been tough to hit for power, ranking 11th in the NL in opponents’ slugging percentage (.431).

Irvin has been particularly effective against right-handed batters. He’s allowed just 15 walks to righties this season, tied for the eighth-fewest in the NL. His strikeout-to-walk ratio against righties is an impressive 4.60, ranking 11th in the league.

Irvin has been a workhorse this season, ranking among NL pitchers in innings pitched (T6th, 166.0). He’s also near the top 10 in several key pitching metrics, including WHIP (11th, 1.21), opponents on-base percentage (13th, .301), walks per 9.0 innings (14th, 2.33), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (14th, 3.26).
