Game storylines and notes

Tonight the Fredericksburg Nationals will continue their series against the Columbia Fireflies.

Last game out.

The Fredericksburg Nationals continued their strong play with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Columbia Fireflies on Friday night.

The Fredericksburg Nationals jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, with Caleb Lomavita and Brandon Pimentel combining for a two-run home run. Jorgelys Mota followed with a triple, and Nate Ochoa drove him in with a single.

Kevin Bazzell added another run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly, and Pimentel continued his impressive night with a sharp single to plate Seaver King.

The Fredericksburg Nationals extended their lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice grounder that scored Caleb Lomavita.

On the Mound for the Fredericksburg Nationals.

RHP Brayan Romero is set to make his fifth start as a Fredericksburg National tonight, facing the Columbia Fireflies. Romero was promoted from the Florida Complex League (FCL) on July 26, coinciding with Marc Davis’s promotion to High-A Wilmington.

Romero’s professional career began in 2022 as a reliever in the Dominican Summer League. He pitched 11 innings, posting a 3.27 ERA and limiting opponents to a .154 batting average. This performance earned him a mid-summer promotion to Florida, where he had a 5.79 ERA over five outings (two starts).

Romero missed the 2023 season due to injury but has excelled this year in the FCL. He’s transitioned to a starting role, making 12 appearances (nine starts) and posting a 2.52 ERA across 39.1 innings. Romero has struck out 39 batters while walking only nine and holding opponents to a .212 batting average.

In his last outing against Salem last week, Romero allowed six hits and six runs (five earned) but effectively pitched 3.1 innings to preserve the Fredericksburg Nationals bullpen.

Show me the GREEN.

After another massive three-run home run on Tuesday night, which secured a victory for the Fredericksburg Nationals, Elijah Green's performance since the All-Star break highlights why the Nationals selected him fifth overall in the 2022 draft.

Since the All-Star break, Green has been on fire, hitting an impressive .293/.393/.522 with an OPS of .914. This marks the best stretch of his professional career at the plate. His wRC+ - a metric that measures a player's contribution to run creation - has soared to 164 since the ASB (100 is average). Additionally, his wOBA - which evaluates not only if a player reached base but also how they reached base and its impact on scoring runs - stands at an exceptional .428 (.320 is average).
