Washington D.C. - The Washington Nationals will play two games on Saturday, October 1, 2022, as they continue their final homestand of the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon. Today's game will be Washington’s fourth doubleheader of the 2022 season. Game 2 of yesterday’s doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be played as Game 2 of today’s doubleheader.
Washington dropped the first game of the series yesterday, 5–1.
Game Notes:
- RHP Aníbal Sánchez faces the Phillies for the second time this season, making his 29th career start. He has not faced any other team in his career, pitching to a 4.39 ERA (72 ER/147.2 IP). In his last start, Aníbal Sánchez pitched 5.0 scoreless innings on two hits, four hits with two walks, and four strikeouts on Sept. 25 at Miami and got the win in Washington’s 6-1 victory. It was his seventh straight start allowing two earned runs or less.
- Double Trouble... The Nationals are 16–7–32 (sweeps-swept-splits) in doubleheaders and 62–48 (.564) playing twice daily since baseball returned to Washington in 2005.
- The Washington Nationals added right-handed pitcher Tommy Romero as the 29th man for today's doubleheader, and he will start the second game. Romero went 3-1 with a 2.33 in six games (two starts) for Triple-A Rochester after being claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on Aug. 25. Romero appeared in three games for the Rays, making one start.
