Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Nats sweep the Reds

On Friday, Patrick Corbin gave up three runs within the first three innings. He settled down though, throwing another 3.1 scoreless innings to end his night. Lane Thomas hit a home run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the eighth, with Thomas on base, Joey Meneses hit a home run to tie the ball game. Jake Alu got the game-winning RBI with a double in the 10th, and the Nats kept adding on runs, finishing the game 6-3. Kyle Finnegan earned the save with a one inning, two strikeout performance.

On Saturday, Joan Adon made a spot start. In this start he went 5.2 innings of being perfect, until the Reds catcher Luke Maile hit a bloop single. A second bloop single and then a three-run home run made his line look worse, but Adon was dominant in this game. The Nationals offense exploded as doubles machine, six players hitting a double, with Keibert Ruiz hitting two. Finnegan finished the game, but did not earn a save in the 7-3 victory.

On Sunday, CJ Abrams and Thomas hit back-to-back home runs on the first two pitches of the game. Abrams got four hits this game and stole two bases. Andres Machado, Jordan Weems, and Finnegan threw on their third consecutive day. Robert Garcia made his Nationals debut, striking out two over two innings. The Nationals won 6-3.

The Nats Report Player of the Series is Adon for his perfect game bid. Many Nats were deserving, which for a team that started the series 17 games below .500, is an amazing thing. The next game starts tonight at 6:40 p.m. and after the game Jeremy Lapidus and I will break it down on In the Clubhouse.
