Nationals Drop Series Finale to Cardinals, Head to Arizona

LHP DJ Herz pitches well, but the Nationals lose to the Cardinals on a Goldschmidt walk-off.

St. Louis, Mo. - Today, the Washington Nationals lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-4, thanks to a Paul Goldschmidt walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. The Nationals were unable to sweep the Cardinals. However, they did win two out of three, and they now head to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks.

The Nationals are now 49-57 on the season, 10-13 as they enter the last few days of July, and 26-30 on the road this season.

Getting today's start for the Nationals was LHP DJ Herz, who pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Herz struck out eight and threw 79 pitches, 56 of them strikes, and faced 19 batters. Dylan Floro got the loss for the Nationals this afternoon, as his record is now 3-3.

The Nationals got three runs on nine hits, left six on base, and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. CJ Abrams got his 51st RBI this afternoon when he grounded out to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, scoring Riley Adams from third in the top of the third to bring the Nationals to within one run.

The next batter, Lane Thomas, got his 40th RBI of the season to tie the game at 2 in the top of the third, scoring Jacob Young from third. Juan Yepez led the Nationals with his 14th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals would score one run in the bottom of the seventh and one in the bottom of the ninth.

The Nationals will fly to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks before returning to Washington, D.C., at the end of the week.

Tomorrow's Probable Pitchers

The Washington Nationals will send LHP Mitchell Parker to the mound with a 5-6 record and a 4.34 ERA and will face LHP Jordan Montgomery with a 7-5, 6.11 ERA.

LHP Mitchell Parker has allowed three runs or less in 14 of his 18 starts this season, including eight of his ten starts on the road.
