Leading this Morning's Briefing: Offense fails to get going in loss to Mets

The Nationals have once again made a bad loss look fine on paper. An Ildemaro Vargas home run in the eighth and a Keibert Ruiz home run in the ninth made the game look much closer. But the lineup failed yesterday.

The lineup allowed Jose Quintana to once again cruise through the game. Yesterday Quintana threw seven scoreless innings while throwing 103 pitches. In his prior start, also against the Nationals, he threw seven scoreless innings, this time on 95 pitches. Before either of those starts against the Nationals, Quintana had a 4.57 ERA over 82.2 innings. He had recorded an out past the sixth inning just twice in 16 starts.

I wouldn't have been shocked if this had happened earlier in the season. But this is supposed to be the “new look lineup” that fans have waited for since opening day. For them to only manage to get on base three times in seven innings against Quintana is a disappointment.

The team will have to bounce back with Patrick Corbin on the mound as they take on the Mets again tonight at 7:10 p.m. ET. RHP Luis Severino (5-3, 3.83 ERA) will get the ball for the Mets. The game will be televised on MASN.

Down on the Farm

The Red Wings took down the Worchester Red Sox 5-1. Dylan Crews got two hits including a double and stole a bag. Brady House recorded a hit. Drew Millas got two hits and stole a base.

The Senators lost 7-6 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Daylen Lile went 2-5 from the leadoff spot. Andrew Pinckney went nuclear, going 3-5 with a home run, a double, and a walk. Jose A. Ferrer recorded five perfect outs.
