According to multiple MLB insiders, it looks like the Houston Astros have reportedly been "extremely aggressive" leading up to the 2022 MLB trade deadline on Aug. 2, 2022. One player that the Astros seem to be aggressive in acquiring is Washington Nationals' first baseman Josh Bell. Bell is earning $10MM this season and will be a free agent at the season’s end.
ESPN's Jeff Passan said Tuesday that Washington Nationals' first baseman Josh Bell, who "will be traded" and could be among the first high-profile names on the move, is a target that "makes a lot of sense" for the AL West leaders.
According to many, the Astros look perfect for Bell as his defense has improved since joining the Washington Nationals two years ago. That defensive improvement is surely key for the Astros, who would have to play Bell at first base frequency given the presence of Yordan Alvarez at designated hitter. Alvarez can play left field and may do so more often with Michael Brantley out indefinitely due to a shoulder injury. When the Astros are back at full strength, either Alvarez or Brantley would require extra reps in the DH slot, which makes Bell a perfect fit.
In return, the Nationals' could get a player or two of young talent from the Astros.
