Earlier this week in a news article by The New York Daily News' Bill Madden suggested that he's "Hearing that former Orioles, Padres, and Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino is quietly putting together a group to hopefully buy the Nationals if and when the Lerner family decides to put the team up for sale.”
We all know that the Lerner family has "begun the process of exploring potential changes in the club’s ownership structure, including the possibility of selling the team.”
Lucchino has had his hands in three other baseball teams, such as the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres, and most recentlyLucchino was president and CEO of the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2015. During this time with the Red Sox's, the team won three World Series rings (2004, 2007, and 2013).
When Lucchino was president of the Orioles back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he oversaw the construction of the Baltimore ballpark. Lucchino has roots in the Washington D.C. area as after graduating from Yale Law School, he practiced law at the D.C. law firm of Williams & Connolly. Lucchino was responsible for bringing future Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein to the Red Sox.
Epstein is currently working for MLB as a consultant and is the brains behind helping end two of the longest World Series droughts in the history of Major League Baseball. The Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs.
