Quick Notes: Season in Review: RHP Josiah Gray

In his first full season with the Washington Nationals, right-hander pitcher Josiah Gray had a mediocre 2022 season with the team.

2022 was a mediocre season for Josiah Gray, even before being shut down at the end of the season. The right-hander Gray wasn't unplayable like Patrick Corbin was, but with an ERA over five and 38 HRs allowed in 148.2 IP, it was hard to watch. That said, looking under the hood reveals something a little more promising.

For one, the mode (most common number) for Gray's starts was six innings pitched. For another, his K%-BB% of 13.5% is outstanding; in an era where the 'three true outcomes are more important than others, Josiah has done a fantastic job controlling two of them. For another, other than those homers, he's controlled contact pretty well with an 87 MPH avg exit velo, though the barrel% leaves something to be desired. These factors led to Josiah having a 4.28 SiERA (an ERA estimator).

Josiah's season was not the step forwards many hoped for, but he has proven he can pitch at the big league level. Gray is still young enough that this is by no means his ceiling. However, he will likely slot third in the rotation behind MacKenzie Gore and Cade Cavalli.
