The 33-year-old right-handed closer is closing in on a minor league contract with the Nationals and will receive an invite to spring training, as MassLive’s Chris Cotillo first reported Monday evening.

MASNSports.com’s Mark Zuckerman reported Tuesday that the deal is pending a physical.

Barnes, who recently threw in front of scouts after an injury-shortened single season with the Marlins last year, will have the chance to make Washington’s bullpen with a good spring.

Last year with the Marlins, Barnes appeared in 24 games and pitched a total of 21 innings. He struck out 20 and had a win-loss record of 1-0 with an ERA of 5.48
