Today, the Washington Nationals announced the following roster moves:
- · Recalled catcher Tres Barrera from Triple-A Rochester
- · Returned from rehabilitation assignment and reinstated right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson from the 60-day Injured list
- · Optioned catcher Riley Adams to Triple-A Rochester
- · Designated left-handed pitcher Sam Clay for assignment
Barrera, 27, joins the Nationals for the first time in 2022. He hit .256 with seven doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 24 RBI, 20 walks, and 25 runs scored in 51 games for Triple-A Rochester. His seven home runs were third-most on the club.
Barrera made Washington’s Opening Day roster in 2021, hitting .264 with three doubles, one triple, two homers, 10 RBI, 12 walks, and eight runs scored in 30 games. He recorded his first Major League hit on July 4 vs. Los Angeles (NL), a single off Blake Treinen, and hit his first Major League home run on July 19 vs. Miami (Detwiler).
RHP Mason Thompson, 24, appeared in six rehab outings between Triple-A Rochester and the Florida Complex League Nationals. He posted a 1.35 ERA (1 ER/6.2 IP) with 11 strikeouts and zero walks in those six appearances. Prior to being placed on the Injured List on April 10, he appeared in two games out of Washington’s bullpen, tossing scoreless relief in one total inning pitched.
Adams, 26, hit .192 with one double, three homers, five RBI, nine walks, and eight runs scored in 27 games for Washington in 2022.
Clay, 29, posted a 10.38 ERA (5 ER/4.1 IP) in six relief outings for the Nationals in 2022.
