San Diego, CA - The Washington Nationals look to take the series after coming close to winning Saturday evening. The Nationals will wrap up the series against the Padres Sunday afternoon. The Nationals will send LHP Patrick Corbin (4-16; 6.96 ERA) to the mound to face LHP Sean Manaea ( 6-6; 4.83 ERA). Last night, the Washington Nationals fell to the San Diego Padres, 2–1, on Saturday night. OF Lane Thomas plated Washington’s only run with a solo homer in the second inning.

The Nationals are looking to secure their first series win over the Padres since May 21–23, 2018, at Nationals Park. Washington’s last road series win at San Diego was earlier that season, May 7–9.

A Nationals starting pitcher has not been credited with a win since Josiah Gray on July 6 at Philadelphia - a span of 38 games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, 38 straight games played without earning a win by a starting pitcher is the longest such streak in Major League Baseball history.

LHP Patrick Corbin faces San Diego for the first time this season and is 3-5 with a 3.99 ERA in 12 games (nine starts) at Petco Park. Corbin allowed two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts on July 7, 2021 - his last start at Petco. Corbin Allowed four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks on Aug. 16 vs. Chicago (NL). He returned to the mound after skipping a turn in the rotation.

Ildemaro Vargas had his contract selected from Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 1, and since joining the team, Vargas is hitting .340 (17-for-50) with two doubles, a homer, four RBI, two walks, two hit by a pitch, and four runs scored.
