Worcester, MA - The Worcester Red Sox defeated the Rochester Red Wings 4-13 this afternoon. C Riley Adams and 3B Carter Kieboom delivered multi-hit efforts, and DH Travis Blankenhorn extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
Rochester is now 31-27 for the season and 16-14 on the road. Rochester went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 base runners on base this afternoon. The Red Wings gave up 14 hits and 13 runs.
LHP Andrew Alvarez made his Rochester Red Wing debut this afternoon and gave up six runs on five hits over 2.2 innings of work. Alvarez threw a total of 69, 36 being called strikes. Alvarez only faced 19 batters this afternoon.
Alvarez was also charged with a Balk and a pitch-time violation during his appearance this afternoon.
Worcester jumped on an early lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to Red Sox’s Nick Yorke and Mickey Gasper.
In the bottom of the second, after the Red Wings scored one run in the top of these second thanks to an RBI single from Jack Dunn, Worcester scored two more runs thanks to a two-run home run by Sox’s Mathew Lugo.
Rochester pulled within one once again in the top of the third thanks to a two-run RBI single by Carter Kieboom, driving in Trey Lipscomb and Riley Adams; however, the momentum was killed quickly when the Worcester Red Sox added two more runs. The Red Sox didn’t stop there; they put up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and ran away with the win.
Rochester began to cut into the run deficit in the top of the sixth led off by a walk from CF Alex Call. Travis Blankenhorn hit a sharp line drive double to center field to bring Call around to score and leave the score at 9-4, going into the bottom half of the sixth.
Next, the Rochester Red Wings will continue their series in Worcester and will send RHP Thaddeus Ward (4-2, 6.15) to the mound, and the Red Wings will face RHP Josh Winckowski (0-2, 4.61) tomorrow night. The first pitch is at 6:45 p.m. EDT.
The Red Wings still lead the series 2-1 heading into tomorrow night’s game.
