Patrick Corbin's season ended today as he was pulled from his start after getting tagged with seven runs versus Philadelphia, bringing a merciful end to a brutal season; Corbin will end the season with an ERA at 6.31, which (while Corbin will barely escape qualifying for ERA by a few innings) is almost a run more than second-worst Jose Berrios (5.37). Corbin's 1.70 WHIP will also make him the worst in baseball by a wide margin.
Corbin's sabermetrics offer no relief. His baseball savant page is dominated by dark blue. His Avg exit velo, hard-hit rate, xERA, xWOBA, xBA, xSLG, and Barrel% all place him the 5th percentile or worse. Corbin was hurt by a bad defense playing behind him, but that doesn't even come close to canceling out his disappointing results. I won't dive into how historically bad the season was; that just feels like piling on, but the fact that that is worth mentioning is damning.
It's worth mentioning the importance of compassion at this point. Fans have every right to be incensed by his failure, especially when he's getting paid 25 million to do it, but the idea that he isn't a competitor or that he isn't trying is just flat-out incorrect. People- especially those in media, need to be cognizant that their words have an impact and that this is a human being trying their best in a difficult job. Be kind.
