After dropping two of three in Milwaukee, the Nationals road trip continues to Miami, FL to take on the Marlins for a three-game set.

Let's take a look at the projected pitching matchups for the series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Tuesday, August 24, RHP Erick Fedde (5-8, 5.14 ERA) vs. LHP Jesus Luzardo (4-6, 7.76 ERA) | First Pitch: 7:10 pm

After dropping two of three in Milwaukee to the Brewers, the Nationals look to regroup after having Monday off. Erick Fedde will start Tuesday for the fifth time in August. He has been very average this month, averaging just under five innings per start and an ERA of 5.49. His last outing against Miami was a good one back on July 21st where he pitched six scoreless innings on only 84 pitches. He has a 0.84 ERA against Miami in four career appearances against them.

Facing Fedde will be the young lefty Jesus Luzardo, who the Marlins acquired at the deadline from the Athletics. Luzardo, initially drafted by Washington, is now trying to settle into a starting role in Miami. Since being traded, he has pitched four times and his ERA in August is up to a horrific 9.68. Luzardo has never pitched against Washington in his career thus far.

Wednesday, August 25, RHP Josiah Gray (0-1, 3.90 ERA) vs. Edward Cabrera (0-0, ) 0.00 ERA | First Pitch: 7:10 pm

The young right hander Josiah Gray will be making his fifth start for the Nationals on Tuesday night to face the Marlins for the first time in his career. In his last two starts, Gray has worked up to six innings and 87 pitches in each outing. His ERA since coming to DC is now 2.86 and he also has a 9.00 K/9 ratio. Gray could show the ability to continue upping his pitch count slightly with each outing.

Facing Gray will be another rookie in Edward Cabrera who will be making his MLB debut. Coming into 2021, Cabrera was a top 100 prospect and will be exciting to watch.

Thursday, August 26, LHP Patrick Corbin (7-12, 5.82 ERA) vs. RHP Elieser Hernandez (0-1, 4.15 ERA) | First Pitch: 7:10 pm

The final matchup of this series will see the Nationals pitch Patrick Corbin. Corbin, who is still giving up runs as shown by his 6.00 ERA in August, has seemingly found a way to get deeper into starts. It isn’t what we want, but Corbin has gone six or more innings in four of his previous eight starts. In his last start against Miami in June, Corbin pitched six innings on 77 pitches, giving up three runs with six strikeouts. In 14 career starts against the Marlins, Corbin is 5-4 with a 3.84 ERA.

Facing Corbin is another young Marlin in Elieser Hernandez. With only 191 innings under his belt and four appearances this season, Hernandez is very inexperienced in the majors. He has only pitched more than five innings once when he went 5.1 innings against the Cubs on August 15th. Hernandez does have nine career appearances against Washington with an ERA of 7.18 and a record of 1-2.
