The Nationals avoided a sweep by the lonely Pittsburgh Pirates as they won their Sunday Afternoon game 6-2. Patrick Corbin, who has had a very tough season, held the Pirates to just two runs. Corbin pitched his second consecutive solid game for the Nationals by throwing 101 pitches over seven innings while allowing four hits, two runs, and two walks and striking out four. Corbin retired his final 12 batters over four scoreless 1-2-3 innings. "I thought overall [I] threw strikes, was in the zone, got a bunch of ground balls, and [was] able to put up some zeros there late," Corbin noted in his post-game press conference.

Yesterday's effort by Corbin didn't go unnoticed by manager Dave Martinez. In his post-game press conference, Martinez said: "I like when he throws the ball down [and] he uses both sides of the plate… That's the key to me, is that he utilized the outside part of the plate very well today and pitched in when he had to… I'm excited about the way Corbin's pitching," Martinez said. "For me, it's giving that bullpen a little break. Now we've got some guys that'll come back; they'll be fresh for tomorrow."

Corbin was able to get some run support by Juan Soto, who had a triple in the second inning, and home runs by Alex Avila and Luis Garica, and Lane Thomas. The Nationals went 3-10 with runners in scoring position and only left eight runners on base all game.

The Nationals are still in last place in the NL East with a 59-84 record and are 17.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. The Nationals return to Nats Park for a three-game series against the Miami Marlins and then a weekend series against the Colorado Rockies.

Former Washington Nationals pitcher and Ace Max Scherzer yesterday afternoon became the 19th pitcher in the Major Leagues to record 3,000 strikeouts when he struck out San Diego's First baseman Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning. He got a loud ovation from the Dodgers fans in attendance.

As we all know, Scherzer has already had some amazing accomplishments in his career. He's a three-time Cy Young Award winner (and making a strong case for a fourth his year), he is also an eight-time All-star and is one of just four pitchers to start at least four All-Star Games, oh and he has won a World Series, and has recorded a 20 strikeout game. If not just getting his 3,000th strikeout, he carried a perfect game into the eighth inning, when Hosmer got his revenge by hitting a one-out double. Scherzer struck out nine over eight scoreless innings. He retired the first 23 batters he faced.

Scherzer could pass another member of the 3,000 strikeout club Justin Verlander for the No. 18 on the all-time list by the end of this season. JUST WOW!!

Let's hope that the Nationals can resign Scherzer and have his career end with the Nationals.

One last stat about Scherzer, pointed out by our friends at Talk Nats, Scherzer has had 1,610 strikeouts with the Nationals, followed by the Tigers with 1,081, then the Arizona Diamondbacks with 240 strikeouts, and then last the LA Dodgers with 69. No matter what happens next with Scherzer, he will be a forever a Washington National. Down on the farm: In his latest appearance, Washington Nationals first-round draft pick of 2019, Jackson Rutledge, pitched for the Fredericksburg Nationals yesterday afternoon. Jackson Rutledge went four innings, gave up only one run on three hits, had four strikeouts and 37 strikes on 52 pitches. Rutledge has been dealing with some blister issues over the past few months, limiting his pitching chances this summer. The FredNats finished their road schedule with a 17-43 record and will play their final six games at home against the Lynchburg Hillcats beginning Tuesday.

In Rochester, the RedWings blew a six-run lead to the Scranton/Wilkes -Barre over the weekend. Victor Robles delivered his second double of the game in the third inning to drive in a run, and Jake Noll hit his 26th double of the season, which plated two more runs, but that wasn't enough. On Sunday afternoon, Rochester was able to bounce back by scoring four in the eighth and three runs in the ninth to snap their 11-game losing streak. Trailing 7-1 in the eighth inning, Victor Robles started the comeback with a solo home run. Tanner Rainey got the win for Rochester.

The Red Wings return to Frontier Field on Tuesday night to open a series against the Buffalo Bisons.

Lastly, Minor League Baseball announced last week that Rochester Red Wings left-handed pitcher Ben Braymer was named the Triple-A East Pitcher of the Month for August.

Braymer was 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA (11 ER, 32.0 IP) in six appearances (five starts) with 18 hits, three home runs, two hit batters, 15 walks, and 21 strikeouts. He allowed two hits or fewer in four games and had three scoreless starts. Braymer won three consecutive appearances from August 14-25. Six of the 11 runs he allowed came in one outing. The former 18th round selection by the Nationals in 2016 out of Auburn University is now 6-7 with a 5.56 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) this season.
