Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Nationals drop game one of the series
The Nationals’ bats went quiet and failed to score a run off of the Orioles, losing the game 1-0. Gunnar Henderson hit a home run in the first at-bat of the bottom of the first.
We just talked about him in yesterday’s briefing, but Josiah Gray had a really strong performance. He struck out seven batters, threw over 60 percent of his pitches for strikes, and allowed only four hits after the solo shot to start his day. Gray will now end his season with a 3.91 ERA over 159 innings. Six innings from him last night, and then Jordan Weems had a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and Robert Garcia finished the game. The pitching staff did its job.
Kyle Bradish allowed only five base runners in his eight innings of work. Keibert Ruiz, Joey Meneses, and Luis García are the only players who got on base, all having singled. Ruiz and García both drew a walk as well. Not a great performance against a playoff contender, especially when a majority of the lineup we saw last night will return next season. It happens though, that’s baseball, hopefully the Nats can squeeze out a win tonight against RHP Grayson Rodriguez with Patrick Corbin on the bump. Four more games to get that elusive 70th win.
Josiah Gray is the Nats Report Player of the Game, throwing six innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out seven.
