Good Tuesday Morning Washington Nationals Fans,
Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Thank you for starting your day with us.
Leading today's Morning Briefing: Max Scherzer Signs with the New York Mets on a $130M, on a 3-year deal. Well, when will 2021 end? It's been a tough couple of years for Washington Nationals fans, and yesterday's news about Max Scherzer signing with a team within the NL East just makes the fall from 2019 so much harder. After missing out on Steven Matz, Mets ownership went hard after Cy-Young Award Winner Max Scherzer. Yesterday afternoon, Max Scherzer and the New York Mets agreed to a record-breaking 3 year deal for $130M.
Reaction from Queens. The reaction of Scherzer joining another multi Cy Young Award Winner Jacob DeGrom was met with joy. Metsmerized has a must-read article. More reactions from Queens can be found here, here, and here.
In other Free-Agent News. Yesterday, brought a lot of action in the Free agent market with the current CBA about to expire and a lockout more than likely going to happen (more on that later in the briefing). Here is a wrap up of all the big free agent signings from yesterday:
- Javier Báez is close to signing a multiyear deal with the Detroit Tigers
- Free-agent Chris Taylor is drawing broad interest and could sign by Wednesday. Dodgers would like to retain him. Blue Jays, Mariners, Angels, and Nationals also have been involved over the past week.
- Texas Rangers sign SS Corey Seager to a 10-year, $325 million deal.
- Right-handed reliever Daniel Hudson and the Los Angeles Dodgers are nearing an agreement on a one-year deal, sources tell ESPN. When completed, it’s expected to be for around $7 million.
- Reigning AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and the Seattle Mariners are finalizing a five-year, $115 million contract with an opt-out after the third season, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.
CBA Negotiations Update as Looming Lockout Is a “Certainty;" Expanded playoffs, draft lottery proposals. This headline shouldn't be a surprise for anyone that is reading this. As tomorrow night's deadline to reach a deal to avoid a lockout is quickly approaching, there haven't been any positive signs of a deal being reached, however, Jesse Rogers of ESPN provided an update on some things being discussed in the negotiations.
The first thing he mentioned that is being discussed is expanded playoffs. From the ESPN article: "Major League Baseball's expanded playoff proposal, as part of a new collective bargaining agreement between owners and players, includes the ability for division winners to pick their wild-card opponent, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The format would call for 14 teams -- seven from each league -- to make the playoffs, four more than currently play in the postseason. The three division winners in each league would be joined by four wild-card teams to make up the playoff field."
