Today's Top Story: The Washington Nationals Sign Kyle Schwarber to a 1-year deal.
Yesterday afternoon the Washington Nationals announced that they have signed OF Kyle Schwarber to a one-year $10 million deal. Kyle Schwarber was tendered this offseason by the Chicago Cubs. Manager Davey Martinez is familiar with OF Kyle Schwarber due to his time with the Chicago Cubs. Schwaber will most likely play left field, therefore moving Juan Soto to the right side of the outfield. This move also gives the Nationals three potentially big left-handed bats (Soto, Schwarber, Bell) but leaves them with some pretty shaky defense at several positions that they still need to address.

Mark Zuckerman from MASN Sports tweeted an interesting fact about Schwarber's deal: "One added aspect to Schwarber's deal with the Nats: It includes an $11 million mutual option for 2022 or a $3 million buyout, per source. The previously reported $10 million guarantee includes that buyout, so his 2021 salary technically is $7 million. That said, mutual options rarely get picked up. So the most likely scenario is still that Schwarber makes $10 million from the Nats for the 2021 season. @BNightengale first had details of the mutual option."

There is actually some good news to report coming out of Washington, D.C. If you are interested in the business of sports, this article is for you. Sportico, a website all about the business of sports, reports that "the city's fiscal management of its stadium bonds has earned a ratings upgrade. Bond-rating firm Fitch has bumped up the ratings to AA-minus on $186.8 million in outstanding bonds used to build Nationals Park, the home field of the Major League Baseball franchise. The bonds previously had been rated A-plus. The new rating reflects "very high credit quality," according to the bond agency's scale." Click here to read the full article
Spring Training Ticket Sales??
A source told Stephen from Talk Nats.com, that tickets are going on sale for Spring Training 2021 at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches online at noon on Tuesday, January 12 for previous season ticket holders. From the announcement: "because of the ballpark's limited social distanced capacity, season tickets will not be offered for the 2021 Spring Training." Additionally, in the announcement FITTEAM Ballpark lays out that "for the safety of the fans, players and staff, social distancing guidelines will be enacted throughout the facility and thee wearing of maks will be required at all times unless eating or drinking." Additional changes will include what seats at the Ballpark are offered.
