Leading this Morning's Breifing: Positions of need for the Washington Nationals this offseason

On Monday, Major League Baseball officially kicked off free agency, and not surprisingly, there has been little to no action in the free agent market (yes, there was one minor signing). The Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes was defined last winter, and we are all waiting for Juan Soto to sign a massive contract this year. Many other great free agents are on the market. Soto's mega-agent Scott Boras said in an interview with ESPN, "Due to the volume of interest and Juan's desire to hear [from teams], I can't put a timeframe on it, but it's going to be a very thorough process for him... He wants to meet people personally. He wants to talk with them. He wants to hear from them."

Unfortunately, as much as we want Soto to return to the Nationals, it doesn't seem like that will happen, so that begs the question: what are the needs of the Washington Nationals in the upcoming year and beyond?

We all know the Nationals' front office constantly looks for starting pitching. Adding a veteran starter to the rotation will be the top focus with a very young pitching staff. However, the team also needs help at first and third base.

At the same time, many think that Nationals prospect Brady House is the future third baseman for the short and then longer term, which leaves two positions of need: a starting pitcher and a first baseman.

I've already written about the team's future and some interesting players to add to the roster; however, a source has told us that the team is looking for a younger up-and-coming player third baseman who will sign with the Nationals for three years, which is interesting.
