Good Morning, and welcome to The Future.
I want to start today by apologizing for not sending out The Future, yesterday; it was a long day of family travel as the summer wraps up and kids head back to school. This trip should wrap up my summer travels, so I don't anticipate any more days without your updates.
There is a lot of news around the Washington Nationals Minor leagues, so let's get right to it. Here is what is happening around the Washington Nationals minor leagues for August 15, 2024.
Leading this Morning's Briefing: Welcome to Fredericksburg: Where the Future Starts
Growing up, I believed that Minor League Baseball served as a proving ground for young athletes aspiring to reach the Majors. While this core purpose undeniably persists, the Minor Leagues have evolved into a captivating spectacle in their own right. I've immersed myself in the Nationals' farm system, finding immense satisfaction in witnessing players' development from raw talent to polished professionals.
Fredericksburg, the home of the Nationals' Low-A affiliate, stands as a crucial stepping stone on the path to the Majors. This past week marked a pivotal moment as two promising prospects, shortstop Seaver King (Wake Forest) and catcher Caleb Lomavita, made their highly anticipated Major League debuts.
On Tuesday night, in his first appearance with Fredericksburg, King drove in his first professional run, putting the Fredericksburg Nationals on the board. In his first game King had two RBI.
In last night's game against the Salem Red Sox, King went 2-4 with two strikeouts and a triple.
Another player who is making some serious noise is RHP Travis Sykora. Sykora has already wrapped up back-to-back "Pitcher of the Week" awards and is quickly climbing the Nationals prospect latter.
Last night, Sykora pitched again for the Fredericksburg Nationals and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out five. Sykora faced 19 batters, throwing 81 pitches and 57 strikes. Sykora now has an impressive ERA of 2.51.
In a dominant stretch, Fredericksburg Nationals starting pitcher Travis Sykora has been named the Carolina League's Pitcher of the Week for two consecutive weeks, becoming the first pitcher in the league to achieve this feat this season.
Sykora, a third-round draft pick by the Washington Nationals last year, is on fire. On Friday night, he threw six more hitless innings, extending his current streak to a remarkable 11 innings. This stellar performance led the FredNats to their first-ever nine-inning no-hitter against the Carolina Mudcats. Sykora struck out ten batters and faced the minimum for the second start in a row.
We will know soon enough if Sykora's pitching style will translate well in the other levels of the Nationals system; for now, it is going to be fun to watch.
Summer has come and passed. The innocent can never last.
Ah, we are approaching the second half of August, and do you know what that means? September call-ups are right around the corner.
While the Nationals might be out of and not even close to playoff contention when players get called up, this year's call-ups will be big and provide a preview of what will come with the Nationals, hopefully in years to come.
We will most likely see the likes of Dylan Crews in the majors and sharing the field with James Wood, Alex Call, Jacob Young, Drew Milas, and CJ Abrams. This September will be more enjoyable than years past, that is for sure. One true thing is that the Nationals will be enjoyable to watch this September. Fans and the league in general will get a chance to see what the future holds for a team that, since 2019, has been busy in their "re-tool," "re-build," or whatever you want to call it. Are expectations high? Will it be bumpy, sure? But remember: Bumpy Roads lead to Beautiful Places.
Some important notes about September Call-ups:
Minor League schedule: The Single-A and High-A regular seasons will end on Sept. 10, Double-A concludes a week later on Sept. 17, and the Triple-A season extends to Sept. 24. There won’t be as much of a concern that any players that are close to the Majors aren’t fresh or in-game shape throughout the month ahead.
Rookie eligibility: One of the other changes from previous years is that any service time, at-bats, or innings pitched accrued in September count toward rookie eligibility. In other words, there will be prospective graduations in the weeks ahead.
Prediction Time: Who do you think will get called up in September? Let us know on X, or if you are a paid subscriber to Nats Report Plus, you can leave your predictions in the comments (and if you aren't, don't forget that we are offering 10% off Nats Report Plus for our annual subscriptions.) we want to hear from you.
Washington Nationals Minor Leagues Team updates
We will take you around the Washington Nationals minor league teams
Rochester Red Wings - Triple-A Affiliate
Rochester Red Wings: 11 - Syracuse Mets: 2
W: RHP Amos Willingham (3-3; 4.65 ERA)
L: RHP Shintaro Fujinami (1-1; 9.37 ERA)
Yesterday, the Rochester Red Wings dominated the Syracuse Mets, powered by a potent offensive attack. Third baseman Brady House led the charge, who went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. House has been particularly effective against Syracuse this season, racking up six extra-base hits (two home runs, four doubles) in just five games. House is in the midst of a five-game hitting streak, hitting .292 (7-for-24) with three doubles, a homer, seven RBI, and five runs scored.
Joey Gallo continued his hot hitting with a two-run home run, his fifth since joining the Red Wings. Gallo's power has been a welcome addition to the lineup, and he now has seven home runs and 15 RBIs in just 15 games. Shortstop Jackson Cluff also contributed to the offensive outburst with a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Cluff is perfect in stolen base attempts this season, going a remarkable 15-for-15.
Thaddeus Ward turned in another solid performance on the mound, allowing just one unearned run over five innings while striking out three and walking three. Ward has been a consistent presence in the Red Wings' rotation, posting a 2.42 ERA in his last five starts.
Darren Baker had a productive day at the plate, reaching base three times with two hits, a walk, and three runs scored. Baker's hot streak has seen him hit safely in six straight games, raising his batting average to .343 during that span. His 108 hits lead the team and are tied for the most among all Nationals minor leaguers.
Up tonight: The Rochester Red Wings will continue to host the Syracuse Mets. The Red Wings are sending RHP Spenser Watkins, who enters the game with a 7-5 record and a 4.85 ERA.
Harrisburg Senators - Double-A Affiliate
Harrisburg: 4 - Richmond Flying Squirrels: 1
W: RHP Andry Lara (8-5; 3.94 ERA)
L: RHP Dylan Cumming (1-6; 5.59 ERA)
SV: RHP Jack Sinclair (3)
The Harrisburg Senators defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels by a score of 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at FNB Field. After a solitary run from Richmond in the third inning, the Senators held the Flying Squirrels scoreless for the remainder of the game, ultimately securing the victory with four unanswered runs.
Key Play: A two-run single by Yohandy Morales in the seventh inning provided crucial insurance runs, extending the Senators' lead to 4-1.
Yohandy Morales led the Senators offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Starting pitcher Andry Lara earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits over six innings of work.
Lara has an 8-5 record with the Harrisburg Senators and an impressive 3.94 ERA. Lara is now tied with RHP Brad Lord with the most wins across the Nationals Minor Leagues with ten.
The bullpen duo of Garvin Alston (seventh hold) and Jack Sinclair (third save) combined for three scoreless innings of relief. Senators pitching dominated, retiring the final 16 batters of the game, leading the Senators to secure the win yesterday.
Daylen Lile contributed with a 2-for-3 performance, including a leadoff triple and a run scored. J.T. Arruda continued his hot streak, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. He has reached base in 11 consecutive games and recorded hits in the last five.
Up tonight:
The Harrisburg Senators will continue their series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels tonight in Harrisburg. The Senators have yet to name a starter for tonight's game. The Richmond Flying Squirrels will send RHP Nick Morreale to the mound.
Wilmington Blue Rocks - High-A Affiliate
Wilmington Blue Rocks: 6 - Brooklyn Cyclones: 4
W: Young (4-10, 4.58)
L: De La Cruz (3-7, 4.40)
S: Gomez, M. (3)
The Wilmington Blue Rocks overcame a shaky start from Jarlin Susana to defeat the Brooklyn Cyclones 6-4 on Wednesday night.
Susana appeared dominant early, but the Cyclones broke through with four walks in the fifth inning, erasing a 3-0 deficit. The outing was a departure from the right-hander's previous five starts, where he had walked just four batters total.
The Blue Rocks quickly responded in their half of the fifth. A Roismar Quintana double and a Murphy Stehly walk set the stage for a game-changing error by Brooklyn first baseman Estarling Mercado, allowing both runners to score and reclaim the lead.
Wilmington's offense provided early support with a four-run first inning, highlighted by Murphy Stehly's two-RBI triple. The Blue Rocks bullpen held strong after Susana's exit, preserving the lead and securing the victory.
Up tonight:
The Blue Rocks will continue the series against the Cyclones, with the first pitch at 6:35 p.m. EDT. The Blue Rocks will send RHP Riley Cornelio to the mound with a 6-10 record and a 6.01 ERA
Fredericksburg Nationals - Low-A Affiliate
Fredericksburg Nationals: 4 - Salem Red Sox: 3
W: RHP Matthew Bollenbacher (1-1; 2.61 ERA)
L: RHP Royman Blanco (8-4; 3.21 ERA)
SV: RHP Anthony Arguelles (7)
The Fredericksburg Nationals capitalized on four Salem Red Sox errors to secure a 4-3 victory last night. With the win, the Fredericksburg Nationals improve to 28-16 (63-47) while Salem drops to 24-20 (58-52).
Fredericksburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a Seaver King triple and a Nick Peoples RBI single, aided by a Salem error. Starting pitcher Travis Sykora held the lead through 4.2 innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Reliever Matt Bollenbacher entered the game and allowed a two-run double, tying the game at 2-2.
The FredNats regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Nate Ochoa RBI groundout, which benefited from another Salem error. Angel Roman pitched effectively in relief, and Jose Colmenares added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Salem mounted a late rally in the ninth, scoring one run but ultimately falling short. Anthony Arguelles closed the door with two strikeouts to earn the save. Bollenbacher picked up his first win of the season, while Royman Blanco suffered the loss for Salem.
Up tonight:
The Fredericksburg Nationals will continue their series against the Salem Red Sox tonight in Fredericksburg. The Fredericksburg Nationals will send LHP Alex Clemmey with a 1-5 record and a 4.86 ERA and will face LHP Eduardo Rivera.
