Josiah Gray Headed For Further Testing With Elbow Discomfort

Things just got a bit complicated for the return of RHP Josiah Gray for the 2024 season.

RHP Josiah Gray told reporters that he came out of his most recent rehab start with elbow discomfort and fatigue with the Rochester Red Wings. I asked Rochester’s Manager, Matt LeCroy, about Gray’s performance after Talk Nats [X link] noticed that Gray’s velo and pitch location was down in his Sunday appearance.

LeCroy said to the Nats Report, “Josiah [Gray] wasn't as sharp as he was, [today as he faced] the same team kind of threw him off a little bit with his pitches, but his pitch count was up, so we just decided to take him out.” We followed up by asking if he suffered any injury and was given the answer: “no.”

In his pre-game press conference before today’s game against the New York Mets, Manager Dave Martinez indicated that the team would hold off on imaging until around the All-Star Break.

Gray has been on the injured list since the season's second week and has been the IL since April 9 with what the team called a forearm strain. The right-hander has missed nearly three months but appeared to be nearing a return.

Gray started making rehab assignments on June 9th in Fredericksburg and has worked up to Triple-A Rochester. He has made five starts in the Nationals minor league system.

Gray likely would be appearing in one final rehab outing next weekend before rejoining the Nationals starting rotation, which leads the National League and ranks second in MLB with a 3.14 ERA since June 6.

The Nationals rotation is 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA (15 ER/62.0 IP), 69 strikeouts, 17 walks, and just two home runs allowed in their last 11 home games dating to June 6.

Now, the team will have to wait until after the All-Star game to see what the latest with Gray is, and depending on the team's record at the All-Star break, this might lead to a shutdown for the remainder of the season.
