Things might be heating up for the sale of the Washington Nationals. According to an article MLB's reporters David Aldridge, Brittany Ghiroli, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, it looks like "Leonsis' group has been ahead of the others for the last month or so but multiple sources, though, said a sale is not imminent."

The report went on to say"One of the sources said Leonsis’ group has been ahead of the others for the last month or so. Multiple sources ... It would not likely be completed before MLB’s Winter Meetings in San Diego in December, leaving the possibility for the sale to not be concluded until 2023."

If the current Washington Capital and Wizzard owner does in fact end up buying the Washington Nationals, he would become the second owner to currently have teams in three of the United States’ four biggest men’s professional sports leagues.

As always, a sticking point for the purchase of the Nationals will be what will happen to MASN as the Orioles’ and Nationals’ shared regional sports network. The two teams have been in a lengthy legal battle over media rights fees, for the two teams.

Leonsis just purchased NBC Sports Washington, and therefore if Lenosis ends up purchasing the Nationals, it will add another layer to the battle for MASN.

Lastly, the report mentions that the "Leonsis group is being co-piloted by Carlisle Group co-founder and billionaire David Rubenstein. According to Forbes Magazine’s 2022 rankings, Rubenstein, 73, has a net worth of $3.1 billion. Forbes listed Leonsis’ net worth in 2022 at $1.6 billion."

The Lerners, who bought the team from Major League Baseball back in 2006 for $450 million, announced earlier this year that they were putting the team up for sale after more than 15 years of ownership, According to estimates, the Washington Nationals are worth $2billion.
