There seems to be very little news coming out of Major League Baseball these days as we approach the holiday season. However, here is some news coming out of Major League Baseball:

• Houston’s two-year, $50 million deal with Justin Verlander has been formally approved by MLB, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
• According to multiple sources, the second round of managerial interviews for the New York Mets was conducted yesterday. According to Pat Ragazzo New York Mets Beat Reporter with Sports Illustrated, [Tweet link] the candidate pool has been "narrowed down to Buck Showalter (the favorite), Joe Espada (Billy Eppler likes him, also a candidate for A’s job) and Matt Quatraro (Rays bench coach, interviewed for A’s job)."
• Talking about the managerial position available in Queens, former three-time All-Star first baseman Mark Teixeira who was managed by Buck Showalter believes that his former manager is the "Smartest Man in Baseball." “I think Buck Showalter is the smartest man in baseball, and that is not hyperbole,” Teixeira told The New York Post on Monday. “When you sit down and talk to Buck about the game, he is just so sharp looking at it from all different angles and his record speaks for itself and there is not a more prepared manager as well. You take his intelligence and his preparation and I think he’s a great manager. Just look at what he’s done with so many franchises, building them up from the bottom.” The former All-Star first baseman spent four years with the Texas Rangers with Showalter as his coach went on to say: "Every manager says they have an open-door policy, but Buck truly does,.. Buck is not somebody who will walk through the clubhouse all day long kind of bothering guys, but that door is open and any time you need something you go in there and talk to Buck and he’s going to do whatever it takes to make the team better." EXIT Question: Why is it taking so long for the Mets to hire a manager with an already impressive starting pitching rotation?
