Leading this Morning's Briefing: Nats offense power team to 7-5 win

The Nationals pulled off a 7-5 win on the back of a Jake Irvin quality start and multiple extra-base hits from CJ Abrams. Irvin threw six innings, punched out five opposing hitters, and allowed just one earned run. Dylan Floro melted down, allowing three straight hits before being pulled. Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan had to shut the door to convert the win.

Every member of the Nats lineup got a hit. CJ Abrams, Joey Meneses, Luis García Jr., and Jesse Winker got two hits each.

Heading into today, the win is entirely in the offense’s hand. Patrick Corbin is taking the mound, with MacKenzie Gore’s start being pushed back because of a fingernail issue. Finnegan, Harvey, and Floro are unable to go today, as they have thrown in both of the last two days. Robert Garcia threw 22 pitches, so he is likely one of the last to go. That means that Jordan Weems, Tanner Rainey, Jacob Barnes, and Derek Law are the arms that need to get the Nationals through tonight’s game.

The Tigers are sending RHP Casey Mize (1-4, 4.73 ERA) to the mound. The former top prospect is seeing opposing hitters light him up by swinging early and avoiding long counts, the Nationals’ typical strategy.
