In the top of the fifth, the Washington Nationals put up three additional runs thanks to an RBI-ground rule double by CJ Abrams, scoring Jacob Young, and an RBI single from Jesse Winker, scoring CJ Abrams. The Nationals got their third run due to a throwing error by Detroit catcher Carson Kelly when Luis García Jr. stole second, scoring Jesse Winker.
Luis García Jr. - who is now 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts this year - stole the 100th base of the season for the Nationals. Washington did not reach 100 stolen bases in 2023 until Aug. 29 at Toronto. The Nationals joined the 2009 Tampa Bay Rays (106 SB), 1995 Cincinnati Reds (100 SB), 1991 Montreal Expos (110 SB), and the 1990 Montreal Expos (112 SB) that stole at least 100 bases in 67 or fewer games.
The Nationals had a chance in the top of the eight to break things open as they loaded the bases with no outs, but a Nick Senzel pop-out to second, a Jacob Young strike out, and CJ Abrams ground out ended the inning with all runners stranded on base and no runs scored.
The Nationals ended the night by going 4-for-16 and stranding ten.
The Nationals added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth thanks to an RBI-single by Luis García Jr., scoring Lane Thomas, and an RBI-single by Joey Meneses, scoring Eddie Rosario.
RHP Kyle Finnegan got the save, his 19th of the season. He made it interesting, however, as he was able to close out the game and secure the win.
Next, the Washington Nationals will finish their three-game series against the Tigers and send LHP Patrick Corbin (1-7; 6.15 ERA) to the mound instead of the planned LHP MacKenzie Gore. The first pitch will be at 1:10 p.m. EDT. The Nationals will face RHP Casey Mize (1-4; 4.73 ERA).
