With the loss yesterday, the Nats still are now back at .500 on the season, sitting at 55-55 going into today’s matchup. Yesterday presented another chance to get right back into NL Wild Card spot race and failed to capitalize. Now 3 games back of a wildcard spot, it seems every NL team is struggling to pull apart from the others, leaving the conference still wide open. A win streak is greatly needed from the Nats to prove that they can compete with the best team in their conference, and it would be exactly what the Nats would need to be right in the thick of the playoff race, as they look to put a 7 year playoff drought behind them.

Something that is worth keeping an eye on as the season goes on is the Nats error problem. Arguably losing their lead yesterday due to an outfield fielding and throwing error by James Wood leading to the game tying homer in the 5th inning, the Nats continue to be plagued by errors. The Nats are currently dead last in the league in errors, by a noticeable amount separating them from the 29th worst as well. Although it is to be expected from a young team, there is a difference between expected mistakes from youngsters, and careless mistakes that have to be avoided if the Nats are going to be taken seriously for a playoff push.

Pertaining towards Monday’s 6:00 PM trade deadline, all rumors and ideas currently to stay pretty much the same as past days. There is seemingly slightly increased belief that All-Star CJ Abrams will not be traded, barring any insanely convincing overpay offer. There is also growing talk surrounding trade packages containing Luis Garcia Jr. and All-Star pitcher Foster Griffin, and even Daylen Lile, but they are all coming from analysts and fans. There is nothing set in stone until it is directly announced so be sure to keep on TheNatsReport X notifications, as the team is due for quite the shake up in the upcoming days.

Jake Irvin finally made his return yesterday in his first start since the middle of May, and he was able to get off to an insanely hot start. Through the first 4.2 innings, Irvin allowed only 1 run through 42 pitches. That is less than 8 pitches averaged an inning, as he came out forcing plenty of ground out pop flys to start the game. However, following an error in the 5th, Irvin would go on to give up a game-tying 2 run homer and then walk 2 in the 6th. Seemingly stretched thin in his first start back, in the managements defense it made sense to keep him in the game so late, as his pitch count was so low. Still showing great numbers to start the game, there is definitely hope and optimism surrounding Irvin finally being back to the starting rotation.

The Rochester Red Wings, the Nats Triple-A affiliate, split their doubleheader against Syracuse to move to 61-42 on the season, while remaining in first place in the International League. Rochester opened the day with a 6-1 victory behind an offensive attack that featured Christian Franklin driving in two runs, Phillip Glasser collecting two hits and an RBI, and Abimelec Ortiz adding two hits and an RBI. The Red Wings were then shut out 2-0 in Game 2, managing just three hits in the 9 inning outing.

The Harrisburg Senators, the Nats Double-A affiliate, fell 5-4 in a walk-off loss to Portland, dropping to 50-47 on the season. Sam Petersen continued his hot stretch with two hits, two walks, an RBI, and two stolen bases, while Branden Boissiere and Cortland Lawson each drove in runs, with Lawson launching a two-run homer in the first inning. Harrisburg carried a lead into the ninth before Portland scored twice to complete the comeback with their crushing walk-off.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks, the Nats High-A affiliate, improved to 50-48 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Frederick. Kevin Bazzell and Elijah Green both homered, while Ramirez Jr. added two hits and the go-ahead RBI. Wilmington's pitching staff limited the Keys to just five hits, as the Blue Rocks continue to hover above .500 on the season, extremely similar to the Nats this season.

The Fredericksburg Nationals, the Nats Single-A affiliate, improved to 61-38 on the season after defeating Delmarva 7-3 in 10 innings to remain comfortably atop the Carolina League North Division. The FredNats erupted for four runs in the top of the 10th after the game was tied entering extras. Cristhian Vaquero led the offense with two doubles and two RBIs, and Hunter Hines collected three hits and two RBIs. Fredericksburg finished 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position in one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season.
