Nats Lose Series Late, One More til Deadline
⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH
Dropping the clinching game of their series against the Blue Jays, the Nats lose out on their chance to win 4 straight series out of the All-Star break. Although the offense failed to show up in the loss, another key factor in the loss was once again the bullpen issues. A tied 1-1 game in the 7th quickly became a 5-1 deficit for the Nats, and the offense was unable to pull it back. Now facing off against the number one team in the NL East, the Nats have a crucial 4 game series into the weekend. Unable to get any blows in against the Braves at all this season, this is their chance to finally go for a series win against them, and propel some momentum into the trade deadline.
📊 THE BOX SCORE:
Despite the upsetting loss yesterday, the Nats still sit above .500 on the season, now at 55-54 going into today’s matchup. Yesterday presented yet another chance to officially be into the NL Wild Card spot and failed to capitalize. Now 2 games back of a wildcard spot, it seems every NL team is struggling to pull apart from the others, leaving the conference still wide open. With great head to head results against the Diamondbacks who currently hold one of the spots, a win streak and some trade deadline acquisitions is all the Nats need to be right in the thick of the playoff race, as they look to put a 7 year playoff drought behind them.
Despite the lackluster performance yesterday, the Nats offense still continues to dominate the rest of the field, showcased in a post by MLB’s Instagram yesterday, the Nats now currently lead the MLB in runs scored, home runs, and bases stolen. With an offense that electric (easily the best since at least 2019), there is no reason the front office shouldn’t take the chance and go in on the team. Although they would struggle to compete with top teams, it is streaky, explosive offenses like theirs this season that is the perfect upset potion in a playoff series.
Pertaining towards Monday’s 6:00 PM trade deadline, all rumors and ideas currently remain relatively the same as past days. There is seemingly slightly increased belief that All-Star CJ Abrams will not be traded, barring any insanely convincing overpay offer. There is also growing talk surrounding trade packages containing Luis Garcia Jr. and All-Star pitcher Foster Griffin, but they are all from analysts and fans. There is nothing set in stone until it is directly announced so be sure to keep on TheNatsReport X notifications, as the team is due for quite the shake up in the upcoming days.
Nats reliever Trevor Williams was recently activated from IL this week, and got his first pitching appearance in yesterday’s game since 2025, and the results were promising. Williams was able to go 1.1 innings in his long-awaited return, striking out 4, and closing out the game for the Nats defense to give the offense a chance in the 9th inning. In a team scarce with any promising relievers, Williams is yet another arm to keep an eye on, as the Nats will slowly up his usage and test out the waters with him, as they look for any help they can get.

Knowing that if he puts up any promising numbers, his praise will instantly go up, Trevor Williams notes that he is aware of the opportunity his return presents him.
“It's been a pleasure to watch this team, as a fan and a teammate, from the bench this year,” Williams said. “I’m really proud of the guys for the way they've been holding each other accountable this year and playing up to the level we know we are. It's been fun to watch. I'm excited I can contribute in any way."

In a game that was tied up 1-1 going into the 7th inning thanks to a fantastic outing of Zack Littell who pitched 4.2 innings allowing 0 runs. However the offense was never able to get going, loading the bases with runners in scoring position late, but unable to actually capitalize on any runs. Mix that with the bullpen that was bound to collapse at some point, allowing 3 runs in the 8th inning, pulling too far out of reach for the Nats sluggish offense to catch up. Losing out on a chance to win their 4th straight series, this loss definitely stings for the Nats, as they have to travel straight to Atlanta and begin a 4 game away series with no rest against the best team in their division. It will be a true test of their stability and will as they look to show their chances to make a late playoff push.

The Nationals farm system put together another strong day yesterday, with Harrisburg and Wilmington picking up impressive victories, while Rochester's game was postponed due to weather and Fredericksburg suffered its second straight defeat. The Blue Rocks bounced back in a big way by splitting their makeup doubleheader after dropping the opener, while the Senators continued their climb in the Eastern League playoff race with another explosive offensive performance. With the MLB Trade Deadline now just around the corner, the Nationals' top prospects continue making their case for promotions as the organization evaluates both its present and future.
📊 THE BOX SCORE:
The Rochester Red Wings, the Nats Triple-A affiliate, remained 60-41 on the season after their game against Syracuse was postponed due to weather. The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader today, as Rochester looks to continue its hold atop the International League standings.
The Harrisburg Senators, the Nats Double-A affiliate, improved to 50-46 on the season with a thrilling 9-6 comeback victory over Portland. After surrendering five runs over the fourth and fifth innings, Harrisburg answered with five runs in the ninth to complete the dramatic comeback. Branden Boissiere led the charge, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, while Ethan Petry added a two-run homer of his own as the Senators remained firmly in the Eastern League playoff hunt.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks, the Nats High-A affiliate, split their doubleheader with Hudson Valley after falling 7-6 in the suspended opener before bouncing back with an emphatic 12-6 victory in Game 2. The Blue Rocks launched three home runs in the nightcap, highlighted by Jacob Walsh, who finished 3-for-4 with a homer, double, and two RBIs. Wilmington's offense piled up 12 runs on 12 hits to earn the split and improve to 49-48 on the season.
The Fredericksburg Nationals, the Nats Single-A affiliate, fell 9-1 to Delmarva, dropping to 60-38 on the season, but continuing to hold first place in the Carolina League. Manuel Cabrera provided the lone bright spot offensively with a solo home run, while Juan Cruz recorded a pair of hits. Despite the recent skid, the FredNats remain one of the top teams in Single-A baseball.

The Nationals' four minor league affiliates now have a combined record of 219-175 on the season, with Rochester and Fredericksburg continuing to lead their respective divisions as the organization heads into the final days before the MLB Trade Deadline.
