⚾️⚾️ The Morning Briefing: Trey Lipscomb makes the team after all
Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, March 29.
Good Morning, Washington Nationals Fans,
Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, March 29.
Welcome to the Morning Briefing! Haden here. Let’s talk about the prospect game and who made the team!
Leading this Morning’s Briefing: Nick Senzel broke thumb, Trey Lipscomb called up
When taking ground balls before the game yesterday, Nick Senzel had a ball hit his thumb. He left the field with a trainer and was scratched from the lineup with Ildemaro Vargas. Post-game, manager Davey Martinez confirmed that Senzel indeed broke his thumb. Infielder Trey Lipscomb will be called up to replace Senzel.
Lipscomb was the last position player to be cut in Spring Training thanks to his .995 OPS in 55 plate appearances. He is expected to get regular playing time at third base, where he won a minor league gold glove in 2023.
The game itself did not go well. Josiah Gray gave up seven runs in four innings. The offense combined for six hits, with the only extra-base hit coming from center fielder Eddie Rosario. But hey, it’s Opening Day, let’s not get too doom and gloom as we still have 161 games to do that.
Despite the terrible start, Gray had a ton of whiffs on his pitches and batted ball data suggests he was a little unlucky. The big thing for him is his command or lack thereof.
The Nationals have the day off today and will take on the Reds again on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. Patrick Corbin will get the start for the Nats and face off against flamethrower Hunter Greene.
