Welcome to the second Weekly Awards installment, and one of our last spring training ones! This week we had a lot of really interesting players to get into. Unfortunately, since this isn’t the Oscars, or a Dodgers/Braves website, we won’t have any exciting Will Smith moments, but I promise it’ll still be a good awards show.

MVP: Riley Adams

With Keibert Ruiz slated to be the starting catcher, Adams has had limited AB’s. Two to be exact, but oh boy did he capitalize on them. Adams went deep twice in Friday's contest vs the St. Louis Cardinals. First, a missile out to dead center, in the 3rd inning, and later a bomb to straight-away left in the 7th. Riley Adams is definitely turning heads this spring, and it’s going to be interesting how many plate appearances he gets this year.

Hitter of the Week: IF/OF Dee Strange-Gordon

Strange-Gordon is clearly pushing hard for a roster spot. Gordon kept that push-up this week, with a .375 avg, and it wasn’t all singles! Gordon had a .625 SLG%. Out of the 6 players with as many AB’s as Strange-Gordon this week, only Juan Soto had an OPS within 400 points of him.

Pitcher of the Week: Patrick Corbin

Corbin looked better than we’ve seen him in three years in his appearance. Corbin tossed four scoreless innings vs a Miami Marlins lineup hosting many of their starters, and a few of their top prospects. The most promising sign from Patty Ice wasn’t in any of his results (not that the results aren’t promising) but in the data. Corbin’s release point was in the same place as his fastballs and slider. This contrasts with his 2021 season where he released his slider a couple of inches higher than his fastball. This fix adds a ton of deception to his release and makes guessing what’s coming torture for opposing hitters, causing him to get terribly late swings on his modestly paced fastball. The Nationals may have fixed Patrick Corbin!

Prospect of the Week: RHP Cade Cavalli (1)

Cavalli wins his first POTY award! And you better get used to it, because I have a feeling this is going to become a trend. If you just look at the numbers, it doesn’t look like Cavalli did that well compared to his last outing. Cavalli gave up three runs in three innings pitched vs the Cardinals. But, if you watched it, you would understand why he made the list. Cavalli faced a St. Louis lineup loaded with 7 of their starters, their backup catcher, and their top prospect (Nolan Gorman). Outside of his iffy second inning, he embarrassed them. Cavalli made Paul Goldschmidt look like a minor leaguer, twice! He also got Dylan Carlson on a Pitching Ninja level sword. Cavalli will start the season at AAA Rochester, but I doubt he’ll stay there for long.
