Detroit, MI - The Washington Nationals lost against the Detroit Tigers this afternoon, 7-2.

With today’s loss, the Nationals could not pull off their first six-game winning streak since the final week of the 2019 regular season. However, winning five straight games for the first time since 2021, the Nationals are now 32 - 36 as they head home for a weekend series against the Miami Marlins.

The Nationals are now 19-19 on the road, in inter-league play are 15-17, and have a 6-6 record during June. The Nationals have never swept the Tigers in a three-game series.

Getting the start for the Nationals was LHP Patrick Corbin, who went 5.1 innings, giving up only one run on four hits, striking out four, and walking two. Corbin faced 22 batters and threw 94 pitches, 58 being strikes.

The National's bullpen could not hold on as they were severely depleted as they had leaned heavily on their top three relievers over the past games. Derek Law allowed four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work and got credited for the loss. LHP Robert Garcia allowed two runs on two hits in his 0.0 innings of work.

In his post-game press conference, Nationals Manager Davey Martinez said about the bullpen this afternoon, “We rely on these guys throughout the whole year, and they've done really well…It just didn't happen today. ... It's just one game. We won the series. We get to home now and start a fresh one."

Lane Thomas got his first career ejection by home plate umpire Emil Jimenez in the top of the sixth after barely appearing to react to a borderline strike three. "Looking back, what I said was nothing that I haven't said in the past," Thomas said. "I just thought (the ejection) was a little quick. So I don't know if he didn't understand me, or what happened. But I definitely didn't say anything towards him. That was the frustrating part for me, that it was that quick and not directed at him."

The two Nationals runs came from sacrifice flys from Ildemaro Vargas, one in the top of the fourth and the other in the top of the seventh. In the fourth inning, the sacrifice fly by Ildemaro Vargas was the fifth sac fly by the Nationals in this series. That marked the most in a three-game series in baseball this season, and it is also tied for the most in a three-game series in Nationals history (2005-pres.).

Next, the Nationals will return home for a six-game homestand against the Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals will send LHP MacKenzie Gore to the mound to kick off the weekend series tomorrow.
