PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla - Tonight the Washington Nationals faced their divisional rival: The New York Mets for the team’s first evening game of the 2024 season.

The Mets beat the Nationals 3-1 with Jake Diekman getting the win for the Mets and Richard Bleier getting the loss for the Nationals. The Nationals now have a 6 - 5 record so far this Spring Training.

Jake Irvin made his first Grapefruit League start tonight after his first two outings came out of the bullpen, and he went four innings IP, gave up two hits and no earned runs. He also struck out five in his outing and lowered his ERA to 8.22. Before tonight’s game Irvin’s ERA was at a high 17.18.

The one run for the Nationals came in the top second  when Jacob Young singled on a ground ball to second baseman Joey Wendle who scored Ildemaro Vargas from third.  Vargas who earlier in the inning got a single to kick off the inning. However, that is all the Nationals would score in today’s loss.

From the Mets side, LHP Jose Quintana went three innings, giving up only four hits, no earned runs, and six strikeouts.

According to reports, Eddie Rosario reported to the Nationals’ complex in West Palm Beach today. Rosario signed a minor league deal yesterday, the 32-year-old outfielder had his medicals reviewed and took part in some team activities in the back fields at CACTI Park.

Next up: The Nationals will host the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow night at CACTI Park. The first pitch will come at 6:10 p.m. Josiah Gray will get the ball tomorrow night. Gray enters tomorrow night with an impressive ERA  of 1.80 with two games under his belt so far this Spring Training.
