In their third move of the trade deadline, the Nationals parted ways with long-time closer Kyle Finnegan, sending him to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for two recent draftees, right-handed pitchers Josh Randall and RJ Sales. While Finnegan’s effectiveness as a closer could be debated, his contributions were substantial, particularly given the heavy workload he shouldered over multiple seasons. Though the trade did not yield a blue-chip prospect, the Nationals added two pitchers with intriguing developmental potential.

Josh Randall, RHP

Josh Randall, acquired from Detroit, was a 2024 third-round pick out of UC San Diego. In his pro debut, Randall has mostly pitched between Low-A and High-A, posting a 3.92 ERA over 17 starts this season. He’ll turn 23 in October and is relatively new to pitching, as his college career began behind the plate and only shifted to full-time pitching in 2024. This year, Randall’s stat line includes 80.1 innings pitched, a 3.92 ERA, 20.2% strikeout rate, 4.3% walk rate, and a 47.4% ground ball rate.
