In his return to the starting rotation for the first time since 2020, Trevor Williams had an abysmal season. He allowed a career-high 34 home runs, putting him at the 4th most given up in the entire major leagues. He was also in the bottom 10% of the league in most advanced pitching metrics including xERA, xBA, xSLG, wOBA, and xwOBA. It is safe to say it was a disaster of a season for Williams as he looks to bounce back in 2024.
2024 Outlook:
Looking ahead to 2024, Trevor Williams is fighting to stay in the starting rotation, along with Patrick Corbin, Jackson Rutledge, Cade Cavalli, and Joan Adon. With such a crowd at the bottom of the rotation, Williams needs to prove that 2023 was just a fluke and return to form quickly. If he can’t, we could see Williams transition back into a long reliever or an opener-type role for the Nationals he had been doing in the 3 years before joining the Nats.
