Defensive Position Shift

Via Washington Nationals

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

The Nationals came into the season with one of their main priorities being improving their defense after being one of the top ten teams last season when it came to errors. One of the measures they’ve taken to do that is moving James Wood to right field and Daylen Lile to left, a move that has paid off so far this season.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • James Wood’s left field defense last season was his primary weakness, as he had minus-seven outs above average across all 1,067 1/3 defensive innings he played last year

  • While he still has room for further growth, Wood has seen development with zero defensive runs saved and zero outs above average after the move to right field so far this season, in comparison to when he was in left field this season, where he had a minus-two in both categories

  • Daylen Lile’s numbers while in right field last season were also poor, with a minus-10 defensive runs saved and minus-six outs above average across 445 1/3 innings played

  • This has completely flipped while Lile’s been in left field so far this season, with one defensive run saved and zero outs above average after the switch over, a vast improvement in comparison to where he was just a handful of months ago

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

While this move has improved both Lile and Woods’ defensive ability, it’s not the only adjustment that the Nats have made to improve their defensive game. The move of Luis Garcia Jr. to first base has also seen its benefits as well, as the move has allowed for Nasim Nunez to be the team’s main second baseman. This has led the infield to seeing its own improvements, particularly in the middle of things. These switching of positions allows the Nats to make improvements to their defense without removing a key, necessary hitter from the lineup.

The Potential of Yohandy Morales

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

While batters like Dylan Crews and Harry Ford are beginning to progress and see success in Rochester, neither of them is the Red Wings’ best bat so far this season. That title belongs to third baseman Yohandy Morales, a former second-round pick.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Third baseman Yohandy Morales has been a key bat for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings this season, so far having a .337 average with a .936 OPS in just 32 games

  • He’s gotten on somewhat of a hot streak lately, as in his last 18 games, he’s hit over .400 while also recording four home runs and knocking in 10 RBIs with 14 runs on 25 hits

  • Morales started off strong in the minors after getting drafted out of the University of Miami, recording an on-base percentage of .368 and .339 and an OPS of .784 and .769, as well as 41 and 71 RBIs, in his first two full seasons

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

Over the course of the beginning of the season, Yohandy Morales has become a major part of the Rochester offense, despite having only two full seasons under his belt. And even in those two seasons, the third baseman saw production and development in his swing and his ability to hit the ball and get on base. This all makes him a key Triple-A player to keep your eye on for a potential call-up in the coming months, as he could really help the big league team out with their run production.

💬 FAN’S CHOICE

What do you think of Yohandy Morales’ potential? Do you think he’ll get to see a call-up at any point this season?
