A bit of Little League news and some personal excitement: On Sunday, my son made his debut in the Vienna Chicago White Sox major league team with a spot start in their Sunday morning game. While he usually plays at the Vienna Little League Triple-A level, he was recently “called up” to the majors.

 Washington Nationals 2025 Season

THE LEAD

The Washington Nationals had a Happy Flight home yesterday afternoon after their road trip with a series-winning Curly W. It’s always good for a team to end a road trip with a win, not just a win but a series win against the Reds.

The Nationals bats woke up on Saturday night as they defeated the Reds 11-6 thanks to big time performances from Amed Rosario (3-for-6, 2B, HR,4 RBI, R), James Wood (4-for-6, 2B, 2 R) and Nathaniel Lowe (3-for-5, 2 RBI, BB, R). On the mound, Trevor Williams earned his second win, while Andrew Chafin (0.2 IP, 2 SO), Jose A. Ferrer (1.0 IP, H, 2 SO), Jackson Rutledge (1.0 IP, H, R, BB, 2 SO) and Eduardo Salazar (1.0 IP, H, ER, BB) closing it out.

James Wood continues to impress and showcase why he will be an important part of the Nationals’ future. Entering yesterday’s afternoon game, James Wood has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games, posting a .450 on-base percentage during that stretch, and has reached 27 of his last 29 games with a .400 OBP. He is the only player in MLB this season with two separate on-base streaks of at least 13 games and is just one game away from matching his career-best streak of 14 games, set from August 28 to September 13, 2024.

Additionally, over his last 15 games, Wood is hitting .328/.435/.569 with five doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, 11 walks, two stolen bases, and nine runs scored. He is tied for third in the National League with nine home runs, ranks third in MLB in pitches per plate appearance (4.55), and stands 12th in the NL with 22 walks.

Game Recap

Yesterday afternoon, the Washington Nationals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 in their final game of their road trip and the weekend series, thanks to a three-run top of the seventh. Luis García Jr. kicked off the scoring with his third home run of the season, which went 379 feet in the top of the seventh inning, and a CJ Abrams fifth double of the season, scoring Alex Call and giving the Nationals a three-run lead heading into the later innings. With that double, Abrams extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Meanwhile, James Wood’s double in the 5th inning extended his on-base streak to 14 games, tied for the longest of his career (Aug. 28-Sept. 13, 2024).

Kyle Finnegan recorded his 11th save of the season and his 99th save of his career. Finnegan is one save away from achieving 100 career saves.

LHP MacKenzie Gore got the start for the Nationals and pitched 5.0 innings, giving up only one run on four hits, striking out nine, and walking four. Gore reached 100 pitches with 61 of those pitches being strikes. Jorge López got the recorded win for the Nationals as he pitched two scoreless innings with no hits and strikeout out two. It looks like the bullpen might have found its groove. As it entered yesterday’s game, the Nationals’ bullpen has been dominant over the last three games, posting a 1.98 ERA (3 earned runs in 13.2 innings) while holding opponents to a .224 batting average (11 hits in 49 at-bats).

Looking ahead, the Nationals will kick off a six-game, seven-day homestand against the Cleveland Guardians and St. Louis Cardinals tonight (if the rain can hold out). Here are the probable pitching matchups for the series.
