“It's a hard-fought series against a really good team at their place. You know, I think all three of these games could have gone either way and came down to the late innings. Ultimately, [this is] a chance for us to learn from some things and regroup,” said manager Blake Butera on the series as a whole.

 Farm System Tweaks

Via Washington Nationals

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

With the new management this year has also come plenty of changes, which is to be expected. One primary area where these changes have taken place is at the farm system level, an area that the management team has been focusing on since its first day.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • President of baseball operations Paul Toboni brought in Devin Pearson to be an assistant general manager overseeing the farm system, as the two had success together while with the Boston Red Sox in Connelly Early and Payton Tolle, who are both producing in the majors

  • First move to improve a farm system that is 17th in the MLB was finding the right people, with 30 new hires across the system, which included the number of coaches at each team increasing, as there is now an assistant pitching coach on each one, with the Rochester Red Wings also having an assistant hitting coach

  • Coaching changes also include splitting the hitting and pitching coordinator into two jobs, with two coordinators to oversee development across the organization, and one director above them

  • The minor league teams are now replicating Nats manager Blake Butera’s managerial practices, with pregame meetings to go over team mistakes from the game before, and every player getting a postgame report on everything they did in that game along with feedback

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

“The same way Blake is holding them accountable, they’re doing it across all levels and the players are also holding the staff accountable. If we’re doing things wrong, they should be able to tell us,” said assistant general manager overseeing the farm system Devin Pearson.

theFUTURE

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

All of the Nationals' minor league teams ended their weekends on a good note, with all of them winning their Sunday games and half of them taking their series. Fredericksburg has had a particularly strong start to their season, having a win percentage of 70% and being five games up in their division.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Yesterday, the Red Wings beat the Syracuse Mets 8-5 behind home runs from both Yohandy Morales and Christian Franklin, successfully taking the series four games to two

  • Harrisburg ended their series against the Erie SeaWolves on a high note yesterday, beating the SeaWolves 5-3, with starter Davian Garcia going four and one-third innings and only giving up one unearned run on four hits

  • The Blue Rocks split their series with the Hub City Spartanburgers after winning their game against the Spartanburgers yesterday, 9-3, bolstered by a strong hitting performance from Kevin Bazzell that included a home run, as well as a strong pitching performance from starter Bryan Polanco, who only gave up three hits and zero runs across five innings

  • Fredericksburg took their series against the Hill City Howlers four games to two yesterday, winning the last game 11-4 from a three-run inning in both the first and sixth innings

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

Fredericksburg is so far the shining beacon of hope for the future that the Nats could really use to show that the rebuild is both working and could be upheld once finished. With a 23-10 record so far this season and being solidly in first place in their division, with the team in second place being five games back, it shows an ability to win and win strongly about a month and a half into the season. And with their winning series on both the road and at home, it shows that they can win consistently enough for it to matter and that it’s not just a string of lucky wins. The FredNats have shown so far this season that the future for the Washington Nationals is a bright one, particularly should they keep winning at the pace they currently are.
