Cayden Wallace was selected in the second round (49th overall pick) in the 2022 MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals. He played two and a half seasons in the Royals organization before being traded to the Nationals last July for Hunter Harvey. In the last three seasons playing in A and AA ball for the Royals, Wallace has a 0.260 batting average with 45 doubles, 10 triples, 18 home runs, and 124 RBIs. In his three-year minor-league career, he has a 0.337 OBP and 0.744 OPS.
Cayden Wallace played for two years at the University of Arkansas. In his freshman season, he played right field with a cannon of an arm. In his sophomore year at Arkansas, Wallace was moved to third base, showcasing his defensive versatility. This was the year that he was noticed by scouts as he hit 0.297 with 16 homers. Wallace’s first full year in 2023 was very successful.
He was first assigned to A+ ball and, in August, was promoted to the Royals AA team. Over 130 games in 2023, Wallace hit 0.254 with a 0.331 OBP, along with 13 home runs, 84 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. Wallace’s progress slowed last season with an injury-plagued season. “Everyone battles little injuries, but I never missed that much time,” Wallace said. “It puts it in perspective how grateful I am to have stayed healthy. Now, I’m building up baseball- wise and workout-wise.” Currently, MLB ranks Cayden Wallace as the Nationals’ #11 prospect, and he has spent this spring playing second base for the Nationals. He has played in 13 games this spring for the Nationals and has collected three hits: one for a double and one for a home run with five RBIs.
Wallace’s defense is very solid. The Royals were preparing him to play 3rd base, but the Nationals have Brady House ahead of him at 3rd base, hence the move to 2nd base.
2025 Predication: I would look for Wallace to start the season in Rochester and possibly play 2nd base, some 3rd base, and maybe even some corner outfield positions. “This is a new chapter in my life,” Wallace said. “Everyone with the Nationals has been so nice to me, and we’re a super-talented organization from top to bottom. I’m excited to be a part of it. I just want to help them make the playoffs and win another World Series.”
