How Did Tonight's Game Play Out?
(Bowie, MD) — June 25— With Washington Nationals President of Baseball Operations in attendance, the Harrisburg Senators used a four run 4th inning to provide ample run support for starter Alex Clemmey. Clemmey would provide an exceptional outing of his own. Clemmey retired the Baysox in order in three of his six innings. In the bottom half of the 5th inning the Baysox slashed back to back singles off of Clemmey. Clemmey would go on to retire the last six batters that he faced and combined with his bullpen mates to not allow another Chesapeake hit until the bottom of the 9th inning. Jared Simpson, Sandy Gaston and Marquis Grissom Jr each pitched scoreless innings in relief of Clemmey. The bullpen only yielded one hit, one walk and struck out four.
The Senators offense, which has not been tearing the cover off the ball of late, found the big inning they’ve been searching for. Prior to tonight’s fourth inning the Sens have only scored multiple runs in one inning in the first two games of this series. The Sens also haven’t scored more than two runs in an inning in over a week. It was the breakout they wanted, needed and in baseball sometimes it only takes one swing. The swing came from the bat of Senators catcher Max Romero Jr., whose power had tailed off of late, but he didn’t miss this one. In fact, he caught every bit of the 3-2 pitch and Baysox RF Fernando Peguero barely had to retreat towards the warning track to realize this ball was long gone. Cortland Lawson would triple driving in Ethan Petry and would later score on a sac fly off the bat of TJ White to complete the four run frame. The next inning Romero would get a piece of timely hitting for his third RBI of the game driving in Cayden Wallace to put the Sens up 5-0 and this one out of reach. Cayden Wallace (1), Sam Petersen (1), Petry (2) would all add hits as well to cap the seven hit night for the visiting Senators.
Clemmey Bounces Back with Strong Outing to Open Second Half
LHP Alex Clemmey had the type of performance the Sens were hoping for in his first outing of the season’s second half. Clemmey went six innings on Thursday night which tied his season high. Clemmey has now went six innings in four different starts this season. Thursday night was arguably his best start in about a month. It is a fact that Thursday night was Clemmey’s first win since May 27th when he beat Reading in a 5 2/3IP, 2R, 3H, 2BB and 4K outing. Clemmey’s achilles heal in the month of June has been 13BB’s and 6 HRs in his 5 starts. Though his velocity remained around the same with his fastball in the low 90s, Clemmey was able to stifle the Baysox offense last night and put up a encouraging bounce back performance from his 4 1/3, 6R, 7H outing last Friday evening.
Max Romero Jr’s Power Stroke
Max Romero Jr was arguably one of the hottest hitters in the Eastern League for a part of May and early June. He had two huge back to back series in early May against Akron and Erie and his average peaked to .313 in mid May. Romero Jr spent the majority of the rest of May and first half of June hitting .280 or above sharing time with Caleb Lomavita at catcher and DHing on his off days. Max’s average again shot up to .299 before he hit a bit of a rut last week in a home series against the Erie SeaWolves. Max went 2-20 in the series with both hits coming in Game 1 of the series. He also hadn’t hit a home run since June 13th against Richmond, until last night. Romero Jr clobbered a 3-2 pitch that may landed in Harrisburg to jumpstart the four run 4th inning in Thursday night’s victory. His average is back up to .271 and Max is sporting career offensive numbers across the board.
On Deck:
The Sens and Baysox will meet again on Friday night for Game 4 of their six game set. The Sens will hand the ball to RHP Issac Lyon fresh off of his best start of his short AA season. Lyon had everything working eight days ago against a formidable Erie lineup. Lyon went 6 2/3IP, 1R, 2H, 0BB,5K and earned his first AA win. Lyon takes the ball hoping for a repeat performance facing a Chesapeake team who has 15 total hits in the series.
The Baysox appear to be going with a bullpen game for Friday night’s ball game. They have not yet announced their starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM from Prince George’s Stadium
