Cleveland Owner Confirms Name Change

Cleveland Indians to change team name franchise has used for more than a century however the team will keep the Indians nickname for the 2021 season.

After a New York Times report yesterday, the Cleveland Baseball team made it official to change their name from the "Cleveland Indians," to a name that will be determined in the future.

In a statement issued, Monday 14, 2020, Owner/Chief Executive Officer Paul Dolan explained that the team started to discuss the change back in June following their public "commitment to take a leadership role in helping address many of the social challenges" that were affecting the Cleveland community.

Additionally, in the statement, Dolan said that "over the past several months, we conducted meaningful conversations with a variety of stakeholders, including Native American groups, fans, civic leaders… that focus on Native American culture and issues…"

Dolan stated that this is a multi-phased process and the name change is only "phase one" of the process.

One interesting note from the statement that Dolan mentioned that the "team will continue using the Inndians name and branding," until the franchise "determines a new name and brand…"
