A Nats Report Exclusive: Cade Cavalli Up For Opening Day

Via Washington Nationals

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

The stars are aligning for ace Cade Cavalli as it seems that he will be the Nationals’ Opening Day starting pitcher, according to multiple sources tell the Nats Report. It seems like Cavalli’s probability of being the starter when the team takes the field in Chicago on March 26th.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Cade Cavalli has been a strong Spring Training option for the Nationals, despite his only start being a loss to the Houston Astros

  • Cavalli’s first four innings of his start against the Houston Astros were quick and easy, with him striking out six batters in a row

  • In the game against Houston, he also went a full four innings, which is his most this Spring Training, completing those innings in just 51 pitches, only recording one run off of one hit with no walks

  • And even after the right-hander left the game, he went back to the bullpen to pitch through another inning to build up to a full five in his progression back to full strength for the start of the season

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

While Cavalli not only seems to be the clear go-to pitcher after the MacKenzie Gore trade, it also seems that if he were not the Opening Day starter, it would be more surprising than if he were. The only thing that could possibly impede him from getting the start would be an injury as he ramps up to being ready for the start of the season. This is, of course, always the case when a pitcher is ramping up for the regular season during Spring Training, but Cavalli has also had Tommy John surgery not too long ago, so the risk is something to keep more of an eye on.

World Baseball Classic Update

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

The Classic continues as pool play starts winding down, with many teams’ time in the WBC comes to a close. The baseball stays fun and dynamic, with multiple upsets and close games always keeping everyone on their toes.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Team USA beat Team Mexico 5-3 on Monday, marking the first time they’ve beaten the team in the Classic since 2006, while failing to complete the comeback against Team Italy yesterday 8-6 in a major upset

  • Powered by a Oneil Cruz solo home run and a Fernando Tatis Jr. grand slam, Team Dominican Republic overpowered Team Israel 10-1 on Monday afternoon

  • Team Israel, after losing 10-1 to Team Dominican Republic, was eliminated from WBC title contention, though they ended on a high note by beating Team Netherlands on Tuesday, 6-2

  • Team Japan dominated Team Czechia yesterday, 9-0; powered by a Ukyo Shuto three-run home run, a Munetaka Murakami grand slam, and right-hander Hiroto Takahashi and their bullpen striking out 14 batters

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

With the pool stage coming to an end and the quarterfinals starting on Friday, there are four undefeated teams left, with two of them in the same pool. Teams Japan, Italy, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela remain with records untarnished by losses, Japan having the most wins out of anyone so far at 4-0. As Team Dominican Republic and Team Venezuela play each other today, that number will drop down to three after their pseudo-tiebreaker match. What was unexpected coming into the Classic was Italy still being untouched at this point in the games, cementing their status as the dark horse of the tournament.
