28-year-old Abraham Toro—who can play third, second, and first base—is now a minor league free agent and exactly the kind of low-risk, high-upside player the Nationals could look to bring in this offseason. After seeing Toro play against the Rochester Red Wings last year, he stood out as a steady, confident hitter with defensive versatility—an ideal target for a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite.
Toro has logged 442 major league games with the Astros, Mariners, Brewers, A’s, and most recently, the Red Sox. When Worcester came to Rochester in April, he anchored the WooSox lineup, going 8-for-19 (.421) with two doubles, a triple, a homer, five RBIs, and six runs as Worcester won five of six.
In 2024, Toro split time between Worcester (51 games) and Boston (77 games), slashing .272/.366/.839 in Triple-A and .239/.289/.660 in the majors. Defensively, he handled first base with just three errors in 480 total chances and held his own at third with four miscues in 41 chances.
Now that Paul Toboni—formerly of the Red Sox—is leading Washington’s baseball operations, Toro’s familiarity with Boston’s system could make him a natural fit. Signing him to a minor league contract is a low-risk play that could quietly pay off big for the Nationals.
