THE LEAD: Amazing Week in the Organization

File Photo

It was a great week to be a Nationals fan. A Beltway series sweep over Baltimore. On the farm, we had amazing plays, performances, and firsts for many. It was a great week for players like Brady House, Luke Dickerson and Travis Sykora, with Dickerson getting his first taste of action at Fredericksburg and shining like the Nationals front office hoped he would; House making amazing stops at third base up in rainy Rochester and Sykora making a imprssive start in his rehab from Hip Surgery. We’ll cover everything and more on this edition of theFUTURE.

Player Journey: Luke Dickerson

File Photo

19-year-old Luke Dickerson is a name that is familiar to most fans but not all, but he might be the next big thing to come out of the Nationals farm system. This week is a small but exciting player journey as we deep dive into Luke Dickerson!

Luke Dickerson has had hype around him starting back in high school when he tied the New Jersey record for single-season home runs at 18… if you’re wondering whose record he tied, it’s Millville, New Jersey’s own Mike Trout. The 19-year-old from Rockaway, New Jersey, was taken in the second round (44th overall) of last year’s MLB First Year Player Draft by the Washington Nationals. The Nats knew they had something special on their hands and backed up the Brinks truck and signed him for $3.8 million. The largest bonus after the first round in the bonus pool era. This, plus the fact that he was going to get to play pro ball, steered him away from his verbal commitment to play baseball at the University of Virginia. The word on Dickerson was that he had a feel for the barrel and had an impressive ability to strike the ball to all fields. But some scouts feared because of his age, his bat speed would need some work to adjust to pro pitching. On the other side of the ball, Dickerson has ample speed, flashing near top-of-the-scale wheels in the 60-yard dash. The Nationals also believe he will be able to stay at shortstop, adding to their depth in the position. So far this season, the young Dickerson has two home runs and 18 RBIs over 12 games between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Fredericksburg. If Dickerson keeps up what he was doing in high school and the bat speed catches up like scouts said it needed to. The Nationals have a stud on their hands.

It will be a while before we see Luke Dickerson, but his performance to this point has been nothing but impressive.

Triple-A Rochester Red Wings

Weekly report from Rochester

The Red Wings last week dropped yet another series, this time to the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay), to extend their drought of not being able to win a series this year. Rochester is now an embarrassing 12-31. Although another bad team outcome last week, we had unbelievable performances from starting pitchers Seth Shuman and Andrew Alvarez. Shuman went six innings, giving up no runs and fanning four guys in game one of the series. In the finale on Sunday afternoon, Shuman would get hit around a bit, giving up three runs in that outing. Alvarez, in his only start, went six and one-third innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk while striking out three. On the other side of the ball, third baseman Brady House had a very good week, going 7-25 at the plate with three homers and six RBIs. House was also flashing the leather at third base this past weekend, making several highlight reel plays. Other notable performances were Cade Cavalli’s outing, in which he struck out eight in four innings. Daylen Lile also had a very good game in which he collected 4 hits and drove in three guys.

Up Next

The Rochester Red Wings will take a short trip down the New York State Thruway to face with their in-state rival, the Syracuse Mets, for the first time this season. Syracuse is coming off a series loss last week to Lehigh Valley, This will also be the first full series in Syracuse for Mets top prospect Ronny Mauricio this year. The Series starts Tuesday, May 20, at 6:05 p.m. EDT in Syracuse.

Double-A Harrisburg Senators

Weekly report from Harrisburg

The Harrisburg Senators had a rough week, dropping four out of six games to the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh). The Sens are now 19-20. Top 30 prospect Cayden Wallace had a good performance in the last game of the series, hitting a no-doubt grand slam. Wallace, who was acquired for Hunter Harvey at the trade deadline last year, has struggled to start the season but has came on as of late. Also on a heater lately is Yohandy Morales, who went 8-20 with three RBIs last week. This month, Morales is hitting .371. On the mound, the Senators struggled, giving up 38 runs in six games.

Up Next

The Harrisburg Senators will return home looking for better fortunes against the Chesapeake Bay Sox (Baltimore). The Bay Sox come into the series with a record of 18-20 and 5-5 in their last ten. The six-game set is scheduled to start on Tuesday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m. EDT in Harrisburg.

High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks

Weekly report from Wilmington

The Wilmington Blue Rocks had probably their best week of the season so far as they took four out of six games from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Philadelphia). Wilmington boosted its record up to 14-25. Shortstop Seaver King had another eventful series, going 7-21 with two extra-base hits. King has still struggled to tap into some of his power so far, but has been progressing each game. Also contributing to the Blue Rocks has been first baseman Branden Boissiere, who started off the series hot with a four-hit game and then built on that game, going 10-19 with 5 RBIs. Boissiere, a former top 30 prospect of the Nationals is starting to show signs of being a future first baseman option. Unfortunately, there was some bad news: top pitching prospect left his start on May 16 after only two-thirds of an inning; we don’t know the reason for the early pull yet. Also, a struggling Elijah Green has been reported to have been sent to West Palm Beach for some extra practice to get him on the right track. Green has struggled to hit in the minors since his debut back in 2022.

Up Next

The Wilmington Blue Rocks will head to Aberdeen this week for a rematch with the IronBirds (Baltimore). The IronBirds will be led into action by Starting Pitcher Blake Money, who some would say has been ‘Money’ this year, he has a 2.18 ERA in 33 innings of work. The series starts Tuesday, May 20, at 7:05 p.m. EDT in Aberdeen.

Single-A Fredericksburg Nationals

Weekly report from Fredericksburg

The Fredericksburg Nationals had a rough trip to Delmarva (Baltimore) last week, being greeted with a rainout in game one, then losing four out of the six games and dropping their record to 17-21 on the season. Nationals number one prospect, Travis Sykora, made his first start of the season in Fredericksburg. Sykora went three innings, not allowing a run, walking two and setting down four guys by the way of the K. Also on the pitching side, starter Yoel Tejada Jr. threw six and one-third of one run ball last Friday, lowering his season ERA to 3.45. At the plate, Fredericksburg welcomed in shortstop Luke Dickerson from the Florida Complex League. The highly anticipated 19-year-old did not disappoint in his first six games, going 6-23 with a home run and eight RBIs.

Up Next

The Fredericksburg Nationals will start a six-game series at home with the Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee). Carolina comes into game one with a 26-12 record, one of the best in all of Minor League Baseball. Mudcats catcher, Marco Dinges, is leading the team in hitting with 27 RBIs and an impressive 21 walks to 14 strikeouts. The series starts on Tuesday, May 20, at 6:35 p.m. EDT in Fredericksburg.
