JUPITER, FL -Big news for the Washington Nationals! All-Star closer Kyle Finnegan is returning to the nation's capital on a one-year, $6 million contract, according to Fanside.com and ESPN sources. This move significantly shores up the Nationals' bullpen, addressing a key need expressed by manager Dave Martinez earlier this spring.
Finnegan, who saved 38 games for the Nationals last season, provides a much-needed "bona fide closer," fulfilling Martinez's desire for a reliable presence at the end of games. The Nationals had non-tendered Finnegan late last season, but general manager Mike Rizzo and the front office clearly recognized the importance of bringing him back.
The Finnegan signing isn't the only bullpen boost for the Nationals last Wednesday, the Nationals added right-handed pitcher Lucas Sims, demonstrating their commitment to strengthening the relief corps.
The Nats Report Perspective:
Kyle Finnegan is a National, and the team needed a closer. His 38 saves bring experience, but after a rough second half, can he hold onto the job? His fastball is undeniable, but Lopez and Ferrer will be pushing him. While a premium arm would have been preferred, Finnegan provides needed depth at $6 million.
Overall grade B
