LYNCHBURG, VA - The Fredericksburg Nationals managed only two runs over 14 innings and were swept in a doubleheader by the second-place Lynchburg Hillcats (28-19).
In the opener, Fredericksburg struggled from the start, falling 5-0 as Lynchburg scored in each of the first four innings. Alexander Meckley gave up solo runs in the first three frames and two more in the fourth, finishing his outing with seven hits and five runs allowed over four innings, without recording a strikeout. Offensively, the FredNats were limited to two singles and five walks, unable to score against Hillcats pitchers Braylon Doughty, Xavier Martinez, and Donovan Zsak. Doughty struck out five over 4.2 innings, with Martinez earning the win in relief and Meckley taking the loss.
Game two was a tighter contest, but Fredericksburg still came up short. Starter Yoel Tejeda Jr. was effective outside of a third inning in which Lynchburg collected three singles and scored twice. Tejeda allowed just those two runs over five innings, striking out five. The FredNats, after 11 consecutive scoreless innings on the day, rallied to tie the game with runs in the fifth and sixth—capitalizing on Hillcats errors and a double from Jorgelys Mota.
However, the momentum swung back to Lynchburg in the sixth when reliever Matt Bollenbacher allowed three hits and a run, giving the Hillcats a 3-2 lead. Fredericksburg could not answer, and Lynchburg completed the sweep to strengthen their position near the top of the Carolina League North standings.
The Fredericksburg Nationals, now down 2-0 in the series and on a five-game losing streak, will look to Angel Roman (1-4, 9.55 ERA) to halt their skid in game three, scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
