Washington Nationals Story Line: Washington Nationals look to end losing streak vs. Marlins

Despite RHP Josiah Gray's impressive performance Tuesday night against the Marlins, the Washington Nationals fell to the Marlins 5-2, dropping their sixth straight game. The Nationals now have a 6-13 record.

Gray's Tuesday night performance was impressive. He matched his career-high ten strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work, and Juan Soto added two walks to his Major League-leading total of 18 and finished the night going 1-2 with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Back to the Future:

2017 – The Nationals capped their best road trips in team history (2005-pres.) to date by going 9-1 (.900) at Atlanta (3-0), New York (3-0), and Colorado (3-1). They finished the road trip with a 16-5 win over the Rockies that featured a historic 11-run seventh inning to pull away. The 11-run outburst still stands as the most runs scored in a single inning in Nationals history (2005-pres). The seventh inning featured just one home run, a three-run shot off the bat of Bryce Harper.

The power behind the plate: Washington Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz went 2-4 on Tuesday night and recorded multi-hit games in four of his last five starts, going 8-18 (.444) with two doubles, one RBI, one hit a by a pitch and one run scored. This season, Ruiz's seven multi-game hits rank tied for third in the National League. Ruiz's 16 hits this season rank second among Major League catchers behind Philadelphia’s J.T. Realmuto (20). This season, Ruiz's six strikeouts in 59 plate appearances and his 10.2% strikeout rate rank fifth in the NL.

Ring the Bell: Josh Bell has hit safely in 14 of 18 games this season and has struck out just three times in 49 plate appearances since April 12. Currently, Bell is hitting .294/.385/.512 with 23 doubles, one triple, 26 homers, 91 RBI, 69 walks, and 69 runs scored in 139 games dating to May 13, 2021.

Y. Hernandez and C. Hernández: On Tuesday night, Yadiel Hernandez went 1-for-4 with an RBI…Over his last ten games, he is 12-for-34 (.353) with two doubles, a home run, six RBI, two walks, and three runs scored and has hit safely in eight of 11 games this season. César Hernández also went 1-for-4 with a stolen base on Tuesday night and has hit safely in 15 of 19 games this season. César Hernández's 20 hits this season rank tied for seventh in the National League.

Fedde on the mound: Erick Fedde is 4-0 in seven career starts against Miami and his 1.43 ERA (6 ER/37.2 IP) is the lowest against any team in his career (min. 2 GS). Faced the Marlins four times in 2021 posting a 1.61 ERA (4 ER/22.1 IP), pitching at least 5.0 innings in each start, and had a career-high 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings on Aug. 24, 2021, at Miami. During Fedde's last start, he allowed seven runs (six earned)on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 3.1 innings of work on April 20 vs. Arizona. According to MLB Statcast, Fedde throws: Curveball (32.7%) Sinker (29.7%) Cutter (29.7%) Changeup (8%) so far this season.
