In the hole…

On Sunday, the Nationals will finish their three game series against the Padres with the first pitch at 1:35 p.m. EDT. The probable pitchers are ____.

The start is important…

Over the last eight games, Nationals starting pitchers (excluding openers) have posted a 1.21 ERA, allowing just six earned runs across 44.2 innings with 43 strikeouts and only seven walks. Miles Mikolas has not allowed a run over 8.2 innings, striking out four without issuing a walk, while Cade Cavalli has gone 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 13.0 innings. Zack Littell is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA across 12.0 innings, and both Foster Griffin (6.0 IP) and Jake Irvin (5.0 IP) have yet to allow an earned run during the stretch. Since May 20, the Nationals pitching staff under Simon Mathews is tied for second in Major League Baseball with a 1.86 ERA and has allowed just 0.37 home runs per nine innings.

Why it matters:

This stretch highlights a rotation that is not only limiting runs but also dominating the strike zone. The combination of high strikeout totals and extremely low walk rates points to strong command and efficiency, reducing scoring opportunities for opponents.

Equally important, the staff’s ability to suppress home runs has been a major factor in sustaining this success. Keeping the ball in the park minimizes big innings and keeps games manageable, even when offensive support is limited.

For the Nationals, this level of rotation performance can stabilize the team during long stretches of the season. If this trend continues, it raises both the floor of the team’s competitiveness and the ceiling for a sustained run, especially with multiple starters contributing quality outings rather than relying on just one or two arms.

Yeah, the offense is

Since May 6, the Washington Nationals offense has led Major League Baseball in home runs (35), extra-base hits (90), doubles (50), slugging percentage (.486), OPS (.821), and runs scored (123). Their 90 extra-base hits are 17 more than the next closest team (San Francisco, 73), while their 123 runs scored are nine more than the Dodgers (114). Washington has also recorded at least one extra-base hit in 27 consecutive games, the fourth-longest active streak in MLB behind San Francisco (31), Pittsburgh (30), and the Chicago White Sox (28).

Why it matters:

This surge reflects one of the most productive and explosive stretches of offense in baseball, driven by consistent power and gap hitting throughout the lineup. Leading the league across multiple power categories signals not just isolated hot performances, but a lineup producing sustained, top-to-bottom damage.

The separation in extra-base hits and runs scored underscores how effectively Washington is turning contact into scoring opportunities. This is not just about hitting home runs; it is about applying constant pressure with doubles and extra-base traffic that fuels big innings.

Just as important, the 27-game extra-base hit streak highlights consistency. Even on off nights, the lineup is still generating impactful contact, which raises the offense’s floor and makes it difficult for opposing pitchers to navigate without mistakes..

Individual Player Highlights

CJ Abrams is emerging as one of the top performers in Major League Baseball and the National League as All-Star voting approaches next week. He currently ranks among National League leaders in multiple categories, including second in RBI (47), fifth in OPS (.937), sixth in both wOBA (.404) and wRC+ (161), tied for sixth in extra-base hits (26), seventh in slugging percentage (.549), tied for eighth in hits (60), 10th in on-base percentage (.388), and tied for 10th in home runs (12).

Keibert Ruiz has been one of the Nationals’ hottest hitters, recording hits in nine of his last 11 games while going 16-for-41 (.390) with seven doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI, one walk, one stolen base, and nine runs scored. On the season, Ruiz is tied for first among Major League catchers with 12 doubles and ranks fifth in slugging percentage (.486) among catchers with at least 100 plate appearances. Among all MLB switch hitters, his 12 doubles are tied for second behind Elly De La Cruz (13), and his slugging percentage ranks third (min. 100 PA).

Elsewhere, several Nationals players are making notable contributions. Daylen Lile leads National League outfielders and is tied for third overall in the league with 15 doubles. Nasim Nuñez leads Major League Baseball with 22 stolen bases, ahead of José Ramírez (20), while Dylan Crews has reached safely in all eight games since being recalled on May 19.
