After defeating the Texas Rangers last night 2-0, the Washington Nationals will continue their three-game series this afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled at 4:05 p.m. EDT. The Nationals will send LHP Mitchell Parker, who has a 4-5 record and a 4.71 ERA, and will face two-time CY Young Winner RHP Jacob deGrom, who has a 5-2 record and a 2.34 ERA.
Last night, the Washington Nationals defeated the Texas Rangers 2-0 in a 1-hour, 50-minute game, and the fastest game in Nationals Park history. With the win last night, the Nationals have now won six of their last eight and are 13-7 since May 15th, which makes them the fifth-best record in Major League Baseball.
Michael Soroka allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over 6.0 innings of work and throwing 85 pitches and 54 strikes. Last night’s scoreless start was the first since July 5, 2023, against Cleveland and was his first start of at least 6.0 innings and zero earned runs since 2020 against the New York Mets.
The Nationals’ Alex Call hit his first home run of the 2025 season last night to propel the Nationals to the win, and he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Not to mention James Wood, who went 1-for-3, which brought his batting average to .306 over his last 20 games. Wood has gone 22-for-72 with six doubles, five home runs, 21 RBI, 11 walks, four stolen bases, and 14 runs scored during this 20-game span.
On Deck…
The Nationals will conclude their three-game series and current homestand against the Texas Rangers with the first pitch scheduled at 1:05 p.m. EDT. The Nationals are scheduled to send RHP Trevor Williams, who has a 3-6 record and a 6.03 ERA, to the mound to close the series. The Texas Rangers have yet to announce their starter for the last game of the series.
In the hole…
The Nationals will have Monday off before traveling to New York to face the Mets. They will then kick off a six-game road trip that will finish in Miami over the weekend. The Nationals have yet to announce the pitching rotation for the Mets series.
These notes highlight the recent performances of several relief pitchers for the Washington Nationals. José A. Ferrer has been exceptional over his last 11 appearances, posting a 0.75 ERA (1 ER in 12.0 innings) while holding opponents to a .128 batting average (5-for-39) without allowing any extra-base hits. He has stranded all five inherited runners during this stretch, and the Nationals have gone 9-2 in those games.
Kyle Finnegan ranks tied for second in Major League Baseball (second in the National League) with 18 saves and has not allowed a home run in 42.1 innings since August 3, 2024, which is the seventh-longest active streak among MLB relievers. Cole Henry has pitched 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings, the second-longest active streak in the National League and the longest by a Nationals pitcher this season, limiting opposing batters to a .087 average (4-for-46) during this run.
Brad Lord has recorded 11 strikeouts and held hitters to a .125 average (4-for-32) in 9.1 scoreless innings over his last seven outings, pitching more than one inning in three of those appearances. These performances reflect the strength and depth of the Nationals’ bullpen in 2025.
Alex Call has been a valuable contributor for the Washington Nationals during the current homestand, going 3-for-8 with a home run, two runs scored, and a hit-by-pitch. Known for his plate discipline, Call boasts a 12.4% walk rate across parts of four MLB seasons, well above the league average of 8%. Since the start of the 2024 season, he ranks among MLB’s best (minimum 150 plate appearances), sitting fourth in on-base percentage (.402) and eighth in batting average (.307).
Call has been particularly effective against left-handed pitching, hitting .333 with a .388 on-base percentage. He also thrives in clutch situations, going 5-for-11 (.455) with two outs and runners in scoring position, and is second on the club with a .321 average in those scenarios. Earlier this year, he started the 2025 season on a tear, hitting .348 with a .455 OBP over his first 25 games.
Call is hitting .267 this season with a .380 on-base percentage and 14 RBIs in 105 at-bats. He recently hit his first home run of the year on June 6 against Texas, bringing his career total to 17.
José Tena has reached base safely in a career-best 15 consecutive games, a stretch in which he’s gone 15-for-50 (.300) with a .390 on-base percentage, drawing eight walks against ten strikeouts and posting a .500 slugging percentage thanks to eight doubles and a triple. Notably, Tena has also drawn a walk in five straight games, tying him for the longest active streak in Major League Baseball. His eight doubles since May 14 are tied for the fifth-most in the majors during that period.
LHP Mitchell Parker took the loss in his last outing at Arizona on June 1, giving up three runs—all in the first inning—on three hits over five innings, with two strikeouts and two walks. He’ll face the Rangers for just the second time in his career; in his only previous start against Texas on May 2, 2024, Parker allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings and was tagged with the loss.
Parker has excelled at home, posting a 9-5 record and a 2.93 ERA across 21 career starts in Washington. This season, he’s 4-1 with a 3.63 ERA in six home starts, surrendering just one home run in 34.2 innings.
A key trend for Parker is that he’s been much more effective after the first inning. From the second inning this season, he has a 3.38 ERA (20 ER in 53.1 IP) and a .235 opponent average. However, in the first inning, he’s struggled, allowing a 10.50 ERA (14 ER in 12.0 IP) and a .306 opponent batting average.

RHP Jacob deGrom (5-2, 2.34 ERA), the 36-year-old veteran, is set to make his 13th start of the season—and fifth on the road—today in Washington. DeGrom has been in top form, allowing two runs or fewer in nine straight outings since April 18. Over that stretch, he’s compiled a 1.81 ERA (11 earned runs in 54.2 innings), 53 strikeouts, and a 0.90 WHIP, dropping his season ERA from 4.30 to 2.34, which ranks ninth in the American League. Since April 18, deGrom is among AL leaders in ERA (4th), WHIP (5th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (6th, 4.82), opponent batting average (7th, .195), and innings pitched (8th). For the season, he also ranks in the league’s top ten in opponent on-base percentage (8th, .256), WHIP (9th, 0.98), and opponent batting average (10th, .203).
vs. Washington Nationals
Jacob deGrom has consistently dominated the Washington Nationals throughout his regular season, making 22 starts against them and amassing an impressive 138.0 innings pitched. Over those appearances, deGrom has compiled a strong 9-4 win-loss record, paired with a stellar 2.41 ERA. His overpowering presence on the mound is further highlighted by his 181 strikeouts compared to just 35 walks, underscoring his ability to control games and limit baserunners.
