The Washington Nationals were shut out in the second game of this weekend’s three-game set against the Texas Rangers. Another rough first inning from Mitchell Parker combined with a dominant start from veteran righty Jacob deGrom spelled disaster for the Nats.

Up Next…

On Deck…

The Nationals will have tomorrow off and will travel to New York to face the New York Mets for a quick three-game series before heading back down to D.C. to face the Miami Marlins for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday night.

At the beginning…

Washington’s starting rotation has been dominant over its last four outings, posting a 1.50 ERA (four earned runs in 24 innings) while holding opponents to a .191 batting average, striking out 22, and issuing just four walks. During this stretch, the starters have surrendered only three extra-base hits—two doubles and one home run.

Since May 23, the Nationals’ rotation leads the National League (and ranks second in MLB) with a .266 opponents’ on-base percentage. The group also ranks among NL leaders in several categories: second in opponents’ OPS (.604), third in opponents’ batting average (.220), third in opponents’ slugging percentage (.338), and fifth in ERA (3.36).

Luis García Jr. Swinging Hot Streak

Since May 12, Luis García Jr. has been one of the National League’s top hitters, leading in batting average (.348), tied for third in doubles (9), ranking eighth in slugging percentage (.565), and tied for tenth in extra-base hits (11). Over 18 games in this span, he’s gone 24-for-69 (.348) with nine doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs, two walks, one stolen base, and 10 runs scored.

García Jr. has shown impressive plate discipline lately, striking out only twice in his last 47 plate appearances (4.3%) since May 23—the third-lowest rate in MLB during that stretch. Notably, from May 23 to May 31, he went 32 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout, the third-longest active streak in the majors at the time.

Strong as Wood

James Wood stands out as one of the National League’s top hitters. He is tied for second in Major League Baseball with 37 batted balls hit at 108 MPH or harder, trailing only Aaron Judge (40) and matching Pete Alonso (37). Wood also boasts a .980 slugging percentage to the opposite field, the best mark in the National League and third-highest in MLB

On the mound for the Washington Nationals
Trevor Williams

Right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams enters today’s game with a win-loss record of 3-6 and a 6.03 ERA. Trevor Williams’ sweeper has been one of the most effective in the majors this season, with a .262 expected slugging percentage—second-best among all sweepers—and an expected batting average of .188, tied for sixth best. Opponents are batting just .185 (12-for-71) against the pitch, with only two doubles and one home run allowed in 2025.

In his most recent start on June 3 against the Cubs, Williams took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits over 4.1 innings, striking out four.

Right-handed hitters have struggled against Williams this year, managing just a .194 average (20-for-103) with four doubles, one home run, 27 strikeouts, and five walks. He has struck out 24% of right-handed batters faced (MLB average: 22%) and ranks third among National League pitchers in opponents’ slugging percentage against righties (.262)

vs. Texas Rangers

Against the Texas Rangers, Williams holds a 1-2 record and a 5.52 ERA (nine earned runs in 14.2 innings) across three career starts, but he did toss five scoreless innings with three strikeouts against them last season on May 1.

Opposition Research
Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers are 5-7 over their last 12 games, having alternated wins and losses from May 25 to June 1 before dropping four straight before yesterday’s victory. Despite Saturday’s win, the club has lost 13 of its last 18 games and 14 of its past 20 since a season-best six-game winning streak from May 10-15.

With a win today, Texas would win consecutive games for the first time since their six-game streak from May 10-15. Claim their second series win in the last three sets, secure their first road series victory since May 9-11 at Detroit (2-1), and take a series in Washington, D.C. for the first time since June 9-11, 2017 (3-0).

ON THE MOUND FOR THE VISITORS
Jacob Latz

Jacob Latz, a 29-year-old left-hander, is set to make his first start of the season and the second of his MLB career—his only previous start came in his major league debut on August 25, 2021, at Cleveland. This year, Latz has worked exclusively out of the bullpen, posting a 2.95 ERA (6 earned runs over 18.1 innings) across 12 relief appearances since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on April 16. He has delivered scoreless outings in nine of those 12 games, including 7.0 shutout innings over his last five appearances dating back to May 23. Left-handed hitters have managed just a .143 average (4-for-28) against him, which ranks among the lowest for American League lefty relievers with at least 25 at-bats.

Latz last pitched on Thursday at Tampa Bay, tossing a scoreless eighth inning (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 SO, 8 pitches/6 strikes). Since his season debut on April 23, he leads Rangers relievers with 20 strikeouts and is second in innings pitched (18.1). Before his call-up, Latz went 0-2 with a 3.12 ERA (3 ER in 8.2 IP) in five games (one start) for Round Rock. Today marks his second career MLB start, nearly four years after his debut.
